Smile Diesel leak - tips/where to start?

Hi all - firstly:

2002 Disco II td5, 220K km.

I've just noticed from underneath a dripping fuel leak - hard to tell where it may be coming from, as its working its way down and dripping off the bottom of the bell housing.

Just wondered, before tackling this, what sort of mindset should i be getting into - most likely hose? i know the filter is in the rear, and seems ok, so it isn't that, so the only things i can think of up front are either a line, or spewing at the FI rail, or a pump - just not sure where the pump is or how likely, and i'm at work so can't get to RAVE at the moment.

So just wondered if anyone else has had this happen and what you think might be the best place to start before I randomly start pulling off plastic covers.

cheers
Adam

I'd start by jetwashing the engine/transmission and finding out exactly where the leak is from and make a plan after that.

The most common places are the engine fuel regulator at the front and the plastic supply or return hose at the rear above the fuel tank. The hose abrades against the chassis and wears through then leaks. I've had 3 sets of fuel hoses now but the last set I fixed myself and put a neoprene sleeve around the hose at the known vulnerable points. No problems since For the amateur it's a tank out jobby laying on the ground. But first you'll have to remove the fuel pump to empty the tank into cans as much as possible 'cos unless you are Hercules you'll never lift it down when full and it has to be removed at an angle. The fuel regulator is much easier to rectify.

Thanks guys!

Richard - thanks, should have mentioned, I did pressure wash the engine and tranny area, and that was how I noticed the fuel leak.. so definitely in the front somewhere... just hard to tell i guess from underneath and can't see anything from above - planning to pull the plastic cover that goes over the td5 engine and hides everything (separate question, can I just leave that off??)

OffRoadFrance - definitely toward the front, thank goodness! So unfortunately, the RAVE CD only shows the system diagram for the V8 - it shows the regulator in back with the filter - are you saying the regulator is in the front on the td5? Do you happen to have a diagram of the system for the td5? I'd be most grateful!!

thanks guys!!

Yep, positive it's at the front bolted to the engine. As posted, this is a detailed set of steps to replace. www.discovery2.co.uk / Workshop / Fuel Pressure Regulator

There are sometimes problems with the fuel cooler which is also bolted to the engine RHS.

May I suggest you download the RAVE manual as that covers both V8 and TD5 engines and the ancillaries.

Yes you can run without the acoustic cover but you will find it's considerably noisier as most offroaders do run without it.

Thankfully it's not the rear fuel hose as that's a real PITA but you may have that pleasure to come in the future

hmmm.... well not seeing any sort of drips or spewing from the fpr or nearby pipes, guess i'll have to dig a bit further.. pity my RAVE manual only shows the V8, will have to see if i can find the td5 version... hadn't really noticed, so far everything else has been "close enough" lol... but thanks to the above info, i feel like i have a better understanding of how it goes together... thanks! stay tuned....

Definitely the FPR. I have the new one in hand, luckily it came with both hoses. Unluckily, the top hose which feeds toward the front of the engine was so brittle it snapped in half, and I cannot see any way to access the fitting as it is utterly buried under manifolds and hoses and wiring looms... even if i had the engine out on a bench it looks like it would be a challenge!

So believe I am dead in the water on this one unless anyone knows a trick to access the front fitting. I can't find the RAVE manual for the td5, all of the links seem to be defunct.

And, of course, I lost the little wire clip for the plug, but that seems the least of my worries at the moment.
