Diff being fixed, any other transmission jobs to do?
Hi All,
I have a 2003 Disco II SE with 165K on it. I have a bad leak where the rear drive shaft enters the diff. Been told it is likely to be the pinion seal and going to get it checked today by a friendly transmission mechanic. Was thinking that if i was going to be getting this bit of work done then it may be an idea to get other things done while its up on the ramp and was hoping to get your opinons on the following list:
1. Change fluid in both the Diffs;
2. Check the diff breather pipes are not blocked on both the diffs;
3. Lube the drive shafts;
4. Change the transmission fluid.
Have heard about replacing the front drive shaft etc but not sure if i need to do this as i dont seem to have any problems?
Cheers

Make sure your mechanic uses only a 85/140 gear oil in your diffs and t/case for much better wear protection As for the front drive shaft, you need 1 grease fitting on each of the 3 front u-joints, if it doesn't have them get it rebuild, replace all 4 u-joints at your mileage and make sure you lube all the joints at every oil change.

Thanks so much for the advice, really appreciate it!!
I just got the car back from the transmission mechanic and he confirmed it was the pinion seal however he spoke to the local Land Rover garage who advised that a flange replacment kit should be used to solve the issue as this is a known ongoing problem that wont be solved by just replacing the seal, problem is that the kit is CAD$315! Is this worth doing or is this Land Rover trying to sell me something over the top? Atlantic British don't sell the kit.
Also, how much should the diff oil be costing me?

Hi All,
Have ordered a pinion seal and it should arrive next week. I will be getting someone to do it for me but wondered how much of a specialist job it is? Is it something i need to get doen by Transmission specialist or is it something a general car mechainc can do (i.e. any allignement issues etc?)
Many thanks agai for all the advice........saving me $$$$$!
