Default Diff. fluid change

Anyone got a recommendation for type of fluid to put in the diffs? Also, what should the old fluid look like? I know it shouldn't have anything in it(metal bits) It just looked awfully black. Its prolly cause it hasn't been changed before.

Did you just look in, or did you get some on your finger and inspect it? Mine is deep amber brown, I am sure its not 'fresh' but its not bad enough to change. I do not think that our D1s are supposed to use synthetic, not 100% sure. I dont see much difference between fluid manufacturers personally, they all have to meet the same guidelines, so how Castrol is better than Prestone is better than Pennzoil is better than Quaker State, I have no idea. My understanding is that it will last a lot longer than most of the other fluids as the heat is not quite as bad. I think it should be 75W90 fluid for the differentials (as well as the transfer case). Have fun! Nothing like some Rover bonding to make her love you back!

I went on and took the plug out. (When it drained it was burnt lookin!) Figured I'd change it while its on my rack. I have already learned my truck hasn't recieved much love over the years, trying to make up for it. I was really curious bout the weight, hadn't thought bout the synthetic stuff. So you think its cool to use the same 75w90/80w140(towing use) that it calls for in my jeep? or should I get the next weight up?

80w140 seems too much...LR suggests the 75w90...so, if you do a lot of towing/off roading, maybe go a step up from that one. If you live in a hot area of MS, then go for the higher weight, the heat will help 'unthicken' it, but if it doesnt get too hot, and you do not do much towing/off roading, then stay with the lighter weight for sure...
