Hi, Im looking to buy my first discovery 2 mainly as an offroader/camper.
I'm looking at a car but trying to figure out if it has a diff lock on it.
The car is a good couple of hours drive so I would rather not make the journey to find it doesn't have one.
Is there any way I can tell from the reg plate or pics of the interrior?
the High Low shifter looks like this:
Also, how important is it that an offroader has a diff lock? the spec of the car looks pretty decent for the price (I'm UK based): All new discs and pads
New all terrain tyres
new New oil filters
New front wheel bearings
New steering rods
New drop links
New fuel pump
New wild bear 60mm rock sliders
New safari snorkel
Also has Terrifirma shocks and springs
heavy duty lift kit
Solid winch bumper
Straight pipe center delete
Tinted windows
Full silicone hose kit
Replacement rocker gasket
remapped
This is just a Hi-Low shifter with no diff-lock capability. At the most basic level the response is that this Disco does not have a diff lock.
But wait, there is more!
While the Discovery 2 replaced the ability to lock the differential with better traction control, the reality is that there were lots of transfer cases in the supply line that still had the diff lock. As a result early Disco 2's had a locking differential, but not a shifter to engage the lock. My 2001 has a locking differential, but has the same shifter as you show in your picture. If you search my posts you can see some pictures of the bright yellow lever I installed so I can lock my diff (although I have to crawl under the truck to do so). This picture will also give you a clue what to feel for on this vehicle to determine if you t-case has the feature. The general expectation, and there are exceptions, is that a 1999-2000 will have a lockable t-case and only needs an updated shift mechanism; 2001 probably does. By 2002 and definitely by 2003 the transfer cases no longer had the locking guts. And in 2004 the locking diff came back along with a shifter in the cabin.
You can also google DIscovery 2 center diff lock and get lots of information.
Thanks for the reply Bullet. I'll get under the car tonight and have a look. its a 2002 model so it looks like the odds are against me having a CDL.
