Diff Lock in a Series II

Diff Lock in a Series II
I recently sold my Series I and bought a Series II that I got a deal on I could not refuse. Only thing I don't like is that its got large Momo rims on it. wonder what rims I should get to replace them. Did they go smaller than 18's on the Series II's?
I do like to do some mild offroading often and like the idea of having the center diff lock. I know the Series II for '99 still has it but it cannot be controlled from inside. I had read somewhere that if you have some Series I hardware you can make it work on the Series II. Anyone know how do do this?
Thanks,
Fred

RE: Diff Lock in a Series II
Hey Fred, some DII's came with 16's. My 2000 has them. In fact, I was just talking about swapping wheels with another boardmember, Steve, who was looking to get something smaller than his factory 18's. I don't do much wheeling so I'd be okay with 18's. That said, those Momo's would probably be a little over the top for me.
A number of the Land Rover parts resources sell both new and used OEM wheels. You can probably grab some 16's for $150-200 ea.
As for the locker, I'm sure Mike and some others will have a lot more to offer you than I can.

You can buy replacement linkage from either a D1 or the newer liknage from a 2004, which will allow you to be able to shift from inside the truck.
You can also buy a solenoid switching system like I have so all you have to do is throw the switch and you are locked.

RE: Diff Lock in a Series II
Thanks for all the info guys. I am still deciding on if I should keep the momos as an extra set or get rid of them all together.
Mike, I have access to an old D I for parts but I like your solenoid idea. What kinda costs are we talking here and how difficult is it to install?
Thanks,
Fred

RE: Diff Lock in a Series II
Fred,
If you can find a supplier of the solenoid kit, you would be looking at a little over $400 for that plus the labot to have it installed. I went that way 4 years ago cause it was hard to find a D1 linkage set, of course now I am glad I did. Here is my favorite link for used parts including the shift linkage.

If you want to talk about it, call me.

RE: Diff Lock in a Series II
Got it done. Installed a D I linkage on the D II and it was pretty straight forward. However I cannot seem to get the light on on the dash saying the diff is locked. It seems locked by the way the vehicle handles and I can check by lifting one of the wheels but no light. I also think I hear more gear whine from the transfer case. I might just be hearing things though. Any advice? Also, still having no luck on finding stock 16s for the series II.
