disable airbags in series 2 discovery?
So I was looking to buy a series 2 discovery, one of the facelift 02-04 models. But we occasionally need to have a child up front in the passenger seat. Is there any way to disable the airbag in that seat? The manual in an 02 I looked at said no, but I wondered if this changed for later models or if there's something the dealer can do.......?
thanks for the help.

Bad Idea! First of all its illegal and second its unsafe.I'm in the collision business and know airbag systems pretty well.Chances are,if you were to tamper with any of the airbag sensors(or wires) you would possibly trigger a deployment. No licenced garage or repair shop will ever disconnect an airbag at the request of the vehicle owner, they won't risk loosing their opperating licence. If for example you ever did get into an accident, and your airbag did not deploy because of system tampering, your insurance company would not cover you and you could possibly be held responsible for any injury to your passenger.Children are to ride in the back, period(pick up trucks have a factory certified switch and are exempt) .I've seen plenty of wrecks and have seen what a human face can to to a dashboard or windshield(sorry for being graphic, but its the only way some folks get it),trust me on this, keep your little one in the back where its safer, and don't tamper with the SRS system because it could possibly save your life some day.Regardless of what you hear, airbags do work.
Kids go in the back, that is the law and I would think you would be more concerned about your chils saftey rather then beating the system, and no, there is no way to turn them off.

There used to be a shop here in town that would install a switch for $100. Check for shops that install controls for the disabled.
Before I get flamed: My sweetie pie is 4'9" and when she bought a Miata years ago she was too close to the steering wheel so we had to get the switch installed.
Yes kids are safer in the back, but then you can't see their cute faces and play with them while you should be driving.

Seriously though, if you have to take that many kids, just look for a 7 seater. Kids fit nicely in the jump seats. I saw a guy at a gas station last week that had 5 kids. They were all loading up, using the rear step and getting strapped in to the back. Never seen it all used....
My Jeep came with a passenger sideair bag defeat switch from the factory. You need your key to turn it on or off, and when off, there's a bright light on to remind you that it's off.
I actually registered to ask this, haha.
What if you are off roading and don't want the airbags to deploy? How sensitive are they? I have a solid metal bumper on the front of my disco 2 and when we built it we removed those aluminum crunch zones and just did steel bars. If I bump a rock at 10 mph will they go off?
