Default Disco 1 Shuts Off While Running

A few days ago, I was driving my 98 Disco 1 down the road and all of a sudden it shut off. I was still getting electricity, but the engine died.

I was able to pull the car over, waited a few minutes and started it back up again. The next day, it did the same thing. In both cases, it started back up after waiting a few minutes.

Now, it turns over, but won't start at all. It's still getting electricity (my radio, lights and windows all work) but won't start.

There does seem to be some fluid leaking from the engine on the driver's side.

Any clue as to what this could be?

There is a little valve on a silver pipe on the passenger side of the engine. It looks like a tire valve, push it and see if fuel sprays out.

You also need to see what kind of liquid is leaking. What color is it?

the leaking liquid seems to be clear.

and when i pressed that valve, a little bit of fuel sprayed out at first but isn't spraying out anymore.

Good chance your crank sensor is failing which can shut off the fuel and or the spark. If it is failing, it won't always give you a fault code.

about 130k. and, as it turns out, the problem ended up being the fuel pump relay switch. so, thanks to everyone for their help.

Hey 98roverguy,
Is the fuel pump relay an easy fix? My mechanic wants to charge me over $400 to replace it, but from what I've read on this forum, it's an easy fix. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I can definitely handle a simple "pop in, pop out" kind of deal.

They've already ordered the part from LR, so I'll have to pay for that. I just don't know if there's something I need to know before I go trying to do this myself.

This is the part. http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/YWB100820LG.cfm

Here's where it's located. Pull it up, disconnect the two connectors. Reconnect to the new relay and slide back in place. You just saved yourself a ton of change.
