Disco 2 Key programming!
As an owner other than getting one from a dealer programmed if you are referring to a full function fob. I just make copies of the key to operate the door and Ignition. Local locksmith charges me 8 bucks. That way I always have a key.
It will clear your 3 amigos, bleed your brakes, show your etka or whatever the security code is and program cheap eBay Amazon keys for less than 90 bucks. I was skeptical but programmed an eBay key for the admirals 99 disco 2 this evening. Its a little slow to load but in about 20 minutes I had a working key without ever programming a disco key before
The screen will prompt you when the key is successfully linked to the BCU and will prompt you to test the buttons but will not work the doors until you've closed communication with the BCU.
Things have changed recently.
A replacement fob used to be more reasonably priced from Lucky 8 or Atlantic British and then you could just rent a Nanocom from Extinct (see his website in the sticky section) and the fob could be programed with the Nanocom.
Now Lucky 8 does not sell them and Atlantic British has them for over $350.00.
Replacements can be found on ebay but remember to get 315mhz if you are in the USA.
When programing, the Nanocom will ask for a 6 digit (numbers and letters) code that is on the chip inside the fob. If the fob you are looking at does not have letters and numbers in the 6-digit code I would not purchase it.
May be best to bite the bullet and get the one from Atlantic British and then rent the Nanocom. Still will be a lot cheaper than going to the dealer. Most dealers will not program a new key, instead they say you need an entire new set of keys and fobs that replaces the door lock and ignition set adding up to an expensive job.

A guy on eBay supposedly tests each key before shipping, the ones on Amazon had 10 bad reviews for every one good one. The key was 25 bucks and change shipped. Sold by seller thanksf_7
I still intend to purchase a nanocom but at this time I can't justify 600-700 bucks for the purchase until I'm closer to being ready for the diesel conversion I have planned.
I try to keep a scanner in every vehicle we have on the road as well as an extra to loan friends/family.
I'd never keep a high priced nanocom or my ross tech VAG com in a vehicle for "in case of emergency" purposes. I can have a 90 dollar blue tooth obd dondle die from melting in the south Carolina summer sun or be stolen without being out much.
Having that dondle clear the random twice a year 3 amigos, program keys and scan an SES is a no brainer purchase for those who like to tinker with their own rover instead of being married to a mechanics shop or wait on a nanocom rental to arrive.
