Wow! It looks like you guys are confirming that the D2 have a small turning radius.


But still doesn't explain why the identical 2003 D2 that I borrowed had a better turning radius than mine, and one of the members who replied says his D2 can make a U-turn on a two lane road with no problem.

 

you can just turn them with a wrench... they stick out and make physical contact when you turn the wheel. if you adjust them too much depending on your tire size the tire can strick the fender or frame on full over articulation. when I got my 285/75r16s installed i have to move the bump stops OUT to stop the tire from rubbing the frame. yours might have wondered out or maybe a previous owner moved them at one point.

move the steering full over until it hits the stop. if there is clearance for BOTH tires on both sides, turn the stop in a bit. then repeat in the other direction. i would leave some room as the tire gets close, as the system is dynamic and might bend enough in road conditions to still bend out enough to rub... possibly causing instant tire damage which obviously would be very very bad.

the steering was just ok before i got the tires, now its rather bad... you get used to it and compensate by going really wide before a tight turn... single lane parkinglots can be tricky if they do a 180 and theres a pickup or something long parked in a spot at the corner of your turn. you get used to backing up to make more room for turns if you are avoiding trees or rocks on trails, its livable.

My 2003 didn't have adjustable stops.

There are different part numbers for the stops, but I'm not sure if they are different sizes. Origially FTC5151, and then TTE000010, and now TTE500040.

EDIT: A quick google looks like SOME trucks had shorter stops fitted, and there was a TSB for fitting those if the customer complains. Any way to increase turning radius in 03' Disco? [Forum] - DiscoWeb Message Boards

 

I'm not sure that my 2003 has adjustable stops but I'll check it out for sure tomorrow.

First you need to measure the lockstops you have now, if they are 23mm in length, your stuffed, but if they are 29mm, you can change them for the 23mm stops and your turning circle will improve loads.

Point of order here: your D2 has the wide radius because it can't get round a tight turn. Your friend's D2 is the one with the small radius of turn.

 

I had an 03' with terrible turning radius compared to my 04'. I removed the longer steering stops and replaced with the shorter ones. What a bonus! Can't believe it.

What are the risks to replacing the stops with the shorter ones?

I don't know how much they are, I pulled them from another car. If you want the LONGER ones I have a set.

The only risk would be tires rub.
