Default Disco 2 starter question

My stupid question of the day is....

Where is the Disco 2's starter ground at? I mean from where on the starter to where it terminates on the car? I apologize in advance if this seems like an idiotic question.

thanks,

the idiot

I "believe" the starter is grounded by the bolts holding it in the block, the block is then ground to the chassis by why of a ground strap on the head and the battery ground cable. But I could be wrong.

Thanks, I've been battling a starter issue, and thought maybe there was another ground attached to the starter itself somewhere I was missing. I did not see or loose one when removing the old starter so I assumed it was grounding from the other post on the starter solenoid.

What sort of problem are you having with your starter?

Well Mike, it's a lengthly one to get where i'm at now,

the story goes...

My Disco 2 was starting/running fine. Brought it home one day, did a few things then went to leave about two hours later and the car wouldn't start. All electrical systems worked fine, and there was a quick single click I heard toward the passenger side. The car would not attempt to crank. After scanning forums and threads I did all the easy things first, checking wires and fuses and cleaning terminals (making sure the car was in park). Reluctantly and obviously I went to "check" the starter. Being a novice mechanic I don't have access/know how to bench test the starter so I hit it with a hammer. After that when I tried to start it, the truck would slowly crank then start running. It ran for about 6 weeks slowly cranking after the hammer wallop, the n died for good. After replacing the starter it seemed to start right up with no problem and sounded great as well. about 3 hours later went to go give it a drive and nothing, right back to the lights on, clicking noise and no attempt to crank.

When the car running a few weeks ago I did take it to an auto store and they tested the alternator and battery and both checked out. The car had a new battery put in in February, but also had these weird battery drains. That was solved after isolating the speaker circuit which had some sort of short. I just removed the speaker fuse and the battery stopped draining.

I replaced the battery to alternator/earth grounds, and put took the starter out and made sure everything was hooked up and looked clean. But am still getting nothing, just lights on a single click for my troubles.

Have you tried jump starting? Just thought I would throw that out there as this sounds like a battery / alternator issue to me. I would try this first before messing with the starter again.

I had an issue with my alternator (which checked out fine at the shop). I had a short in the wiring and it was really jacking things up. Car wouldnt start, battery and alternator checked out fine, etc. I re-did the alternator ground wire and it fixed the problem.
