Disco I vs II building for Colorado
For the days when I'm too bruised to ride my KTM (like last week),I'm looking at doing a Disco forColorado trails. Am I better off doing a I or II? I'm in the car business and I'm seeing alot of II's coming through cheap. They seem to be in the $2500 to $4000 for the 00-03's.
I haven't traded in any I's. But, I can't imagine them being that much cheaper.
That being said, I or II?

Disco 1's are quite a bit cheaper than 2's but also tend to have higher mileage because of the age. The Disco 2 is longer and I believe wider so may not do as well on tight trails. However, the D2 has a few more bells and whistles and the 03 and 04 models have the bigger 4.6L instead of the 4.0L. I personally like my D1 but if I could get a deal on a D2 like you're talking about I'd jump on it like a fat man on an oreo.
Buy a 2004 Disco II. Best price for performance. Being the last model year of the Disco II it has all the improvements. A Disco I would make a good project vehicle but may be too much work for a daily driver (if you are looking for Toyota reliability).

If you are looking for a trail rigthat will only see trails and not much on road use get a DI, full floating rear axle, CDL is alreadey installed, they will be less expensive to buy and fewer things to swap out/rebuild which will save you money
If you get a DII you will need to rebuild the front driveshaft, convert the air ride to coils and install a CDL lever and linkage. It all can be done, but it will add to the cost of the rig.

Actually.....Discoveries series 2 were the result of the BMW enginneers improving the D1 to fit BMW criteria of excellence. When ford took over in 2000, they left the disco 2alone or almost ( took away the CDLnipple in 2002 among other little things, but came up with useable cup holders
)until 2003 when they revamped the front-end and decided to use the RR 4.6 engine. The LR3 is ford.

This truck will see trail use 70% of the time.It needs to be trail reliable as an anvil. But, that will only be4-5 weeks out of the year. So, that leaves me lots of prep time.
An '04 would be great. But,it's still too much dough. An '03, too iffy with the oil pump. '02, no cdl capability. So, it sounds like '01 on back. How far back I guess is the question.More research is in order.
