This is my first post and I want to say thanks to those who take the time to give me some advice.

I have a 99 Disco II 4.0 that had an exhaust where the manifold met the downpipe. There were a few other issues as well including a water pump and valve cover gasket leak so I took it to a local shop that I had used a couple of times on some very small issues and where very honest with my brother when he brought his car there. So I gave then a shot on these issues.

Well they broke both bolts that connect the Manifold to the downpipe and now I need a brand new manifold that is going to cost me $400 I don't really have. My questions are:

1. Is it common for these bolts to break (they claimed it was)
2. Are there any alternatives to paying $370 for one manifold (ie 500 for headers?)
3. Any other advice would be helpful.

Just drill them out and use a nut and bolt.

You can get a good used one on e-bay or roverlandparts.com. a few have done headers, but you are looking at clearance issues on the drivers side with the steering shaft. Most all that have done it have had to mod the headers to fit the shaft. Not sure what they started with, but the heads on a D1 and D2 are the same, just not sure about the clearance issues on each one.

 

I thought about asking them to drill the bolts out and use a new nut/bolt as a solution but wasn't sure with the brittle nature of the manifolds. They claimed they can't be drilled out or removed? Is this correct? Any reasons you can't drill them out?

 

The manifolds are brittle and prone to cracking. Mess up just a little and you are done. I got a used manifold and replaced the studs, but I had something to bite on to get the old one's out. Most shops won't try it. Ask to get it back and try yourself.
