Not sure of your definition of major. I had a leaking head gasket and sticking valve at 60k. Had a valve job done, and all is still good at 110k.

I would consider a valve job fairly major. It requires that you take the heads off the vehicle and it probably cost you several grand. I am considering getting rid of my Discovery because I worry about repair costs. I like most people in this forum, seem to love the vehicle beyond reasoning. I rationalise the high cost of ownership because its a high end vehicle (At least it was high end when it was new. I cant give it away now). I am also wondering if a valve job at 60,000 miles is a rare repair job rather than the norm. Maybe I am only seeing the bad things on the forum. You can see that owning this vehicle is like being in a relationship - it just leaves you confused and broke.

I am considering getting rid of my Discovery because I worry about it breaking down. I cant really afford to take it in the garage for a $2000 valve job or a $2000 anything for that matter. I just need a reliable vehicle. My wife and kids drive around in this car daily and I need to know that it wont strand them anywhere. I cant figure out if all the problems I see on the forum are rare problems or the norm. If its the norm, I think its time that me and my beloved Discovery part ways - as much as that would hurt.

I have been around Rovers for way too many years, love the trucks, and have to say that yes once in awhile a problem may arise but for the most part you should be fine.
Keep the fluids changed, do an engine flush once in awhile, decarbon it once a year and run good gas and you won't be loooking at valves until 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Worst thing you may have to do are head gaskets and if you shop around you;ll be able to have them done for around $1500.
Go enjoy your truck,
Mike
