Disco II Tool Kit
Hey folks.
Went on a little trip to Maine this past weekend and the GEARBOX TEMP light popped on. I decided I wanted to check the transfer-case fluid and...stupid me, I didn't bring ANY tools whatsoever.
I ended up buying what I needed from NAPA and Walmart and it cost me a pretty penny...but at least now I have the 1/2 universal swivel deal to get at that fill-plug much easier.
I seen that places like roverparts selling a kit for $150, designed by ROVER ENGINEERS...it comes in a nice case with the Rover logo on it...but it just looks like some pliers and some other garbage that I can get for a few dollars somewhere else.
Point of this post...for those experienced, off-roaders especially...
CAN WE PUT TOGETHER A LIST OF MUST HAVE TOOLS FOR A DISCO I or II?
I'll kick this off:
1/2" ratchet - for removing fill plugs in x-case and differentials
1/2" universal-swivel for checking transfer case fluid
I know we also need that odd-ball deal to check transmission fluid.

I always have the following in my Tuffy box:
2x Bucket Boss Wrench Rolls with metric and SAE wrenches
Bucket Boss Tool Roll with screwdrivers (short and long, phillips and straight), hammer, scissors, pliers, needle nose, cresent wrench
Silicone Tape for radiator hoses/exhaust, electrical tape, duct tape, thread tape
Leatherman
Rubber mallot to bang out bent sliders (haven't needed it yet)
24" long 1/2" breaker bar with 1 1/16" socket (and extension because of steel wheels) for a lug wrench
Zip ties of various lengths
Steel wire
Various bolts and nuts
Saw
JB Weld
MagLite (2-AA in center console and 3-D in box)
Jumper cables
Folding shovel
Tire repair kit
Marine fan
Work gloves
Shop towels
Recovery strap
Air compressor (in side storage box)
I'm sure there are a few things I missed but that's most of it. When I go out I also have a small box of spares, and one for fluids.

nice list.
I'm definitely going to add some of that stuff to what I carry on the road.
At the very least, aside from the necessities to change flat tires, considering the reputation for Disco's to leak, it would be wise to have the stuff to check and add fluid...which for me is a little hand pump and the appropriate drivers to get the fill plugs out.

Yup, hand pump is in with the fluid storage box. I don't have the flexable 1/2" extension for the t-case fill plug so I had the fluid replaced when the brakes were bled and 3 amigos work done. That'll be one of my next tools to get.
Here's a list I came upon a while back, I'd think it's mostly for a D1/D90/RRC, but some share;
[ul][*] 30mm socket for the nuts that hold the radius and trailing arms to the frame ears (also fits the nuts holding on the transfer case output flanges);[*] 15/16" socket and wrench for the for the fasteners that hold the radius and trailing arms to the axle;[*] 2 1/16" hub nut socket;[*] 12mm 12-point socket for the exhaust manifold bolts;[*] 13mm 12-point socket for the brake caliper bolts;[*] 9/16" socket and wrench for the driveshaft bolts;[*] 17mm wrench and 17mm deep and shallow sockets (there are M10 bolts everywhere on the Disco and your Hella 4k's are M10 as well)[*] 19mm wrench and sockets for your OME shocks;[*] 13mm wrench and sockets for your rubberized shock tower securing rings (and 13mm is another very common size)[*] 11/16" flare nut for your female-ended Paragon hoses;[*] 14mm flare nut for your male-ended Paragon hoses;[*] 9/16" 12-point socket for the bolts that hold the brake rotor onto the hub;[*] 17/16" impact socket for your wheel lug nuts;[*] Pozidriv 1,2,3 and 4 (I think the set screw on your parking brake is a Pozidriv 4);[*] 9/8" wrench for your crankcase drain plug (this also works on your Power Tank's regulator flare fitting);[*] 22mm wrench and socket for your panhard rod bolts;[*] a very long 14mm wrench for the 12-point bolts that hold the swivel ball housings to the front axle (a socket won't fit here);[*] 11mm socket for the swivel ball level and drain plugs;[*]1/2" square socket for your swivel ball fill plug [/ul]
