Disco locked up....now rolling again??
Need some help. New to the forum. My Disco 2 (99') locked up about a month ago. Would not move at all. Wrecker had to pull it on to move it. It has been sitting in my driveway for weeks. Went out to start the car to let the suspension build back up. And for giggles I figured I would see if it would move. It did forward and backwards with no restrictions.
How is this possible? I thought I was needing to replace rear diff?

When the incident first happened....there was a brief clunk. Followed by the lock up. It sat for weeks until recent as mentioned. It moved forward and reverse no problem although I did not take it around the block or anything---in fear it may lock up again. I thought it was the rear diff. I have read that it could have been due to low fluid and the diff simply got hot and expanded??
My money is on a caliper bolt that has come loose. Pull the wheels and make sure all 4 calipers have their mounting bolts. If you have lost a lower bolt the caliper can swing up and jam against the inside of the wheel acting like a parking brake. Having the truck sitting and being moved a little by the tow truck may have loosened the caliper from being wedged into the wheel but it can happen again if the bolt isn't replaced.
The bolt could have just worked loose over time from not being fully tightened the last time the brakes were worked on. I've also seen pictures of people who live in rust prone areas where the bolt just got eaten away from rust and broke off.
Here is an update. After hours under the truck thisis what I have doen so far. All calipers are good. Fluid change in both diffs as well as transfer case. Had to replace front drive shaft....although I have narrowed the noise down to the transfer case area. Unknown territory for me. I tis hard to tell but I think most of the noise is coming from the front shaft vs. the rear. Metal on metal sound? Not really a clunk. By the way....changing the fluids in the diffs is quite a task....pump does not want to push the fluid to easily
