Default Disco x-compatibilities

I've been doing a lot of searching and researching..you guys are probably tired of hearing it by now..

Anyway, the cheap 2003 I dragged home needs a motor, and rather than coughing up the price of another discovery for a motor, I'm looking at my options.

Someone mentioned using this one as a spares vehicle, that is an option I am seriously considering.

So I have a few D2's to look at, I'm sure they are mostly very compatible. ONe is an 2001 that is wrecked with a good motor and all there. I understand that 4.0 will drop right in

I also am looking at a 2000 model that is fult operational and looks very nice.

mostly these vehicles are going to play well together parts-wise correct?

Now as far as D1's go, how many similarities/differences are there? I'm looking at a really nice D1 that is showing some aging in its interior. Can I fit my seats and what not into a D1?So far, this 1999 D1 with 100k on it looks like a great platform for me to start with. I'm assuming my axles, trans, xfer case, etc could work on a D1?

I hate to be a pest, and I ask a million questions, I know some of you guys get impatient, but for me this is a toy to wrench on and set myself up an offroad rig. I'm going to take my time and weigh out all my options..

Thanks

Seats won't swap, ECUs and sensors won't swap.

There are approximately 720 difference between a DI and a DII. Shall we list them?

No don't explain

I found a mildly wrecked low mi 2001 disco to donate a motor and a bunch of spares. I think I might grab it as long as the 4.0 is going to work ok in place of the toasted 4.6.

Yes, I went and looked the rig over last night. it is very clean, but the passenger front quarter is hammered. its 104K, motor looks really clean, and runs great. it is SAI. The truck also has new brakes, newish tires, and a ton of nice looking parts all over it.

interior looks great too aside from the headliner has dropped a bit and the pwr seats do not work.

Unfortunatley, it is an 02, I was told it was an 01 which would have been great so I could get the CDL parts.
It doesnt have SLS, so I end up with coils to replace my SLS. I guess I could swap the ECU's and eliminate some of the config issues for the motor and other options I may remove from the 03..any unforeseen gotchas with swapping ECU's?

Anyway If I was to get this rig I could swap the motor into my 03 and have a pile of spares for some time.

I'm still not committed to D2's though, tomorrow I'm going to look at a 66k mi D1, 1996 model that has been pampered by old folks...I may go that route and part out this 03..

I must seem pretty flighty! I just couldn't walk by this 03 for $400 though. All I can say is I've committed to getting a discovery. I will get there. Maybe this '96 will get me into a sweet rig with a lot less big ticket items and a lot less work up front..

What you should do is get the DI. Depending on price and condition. But with only 66k on it.... It should be pretty good. I know DI's aren't as modern and comfortable as DII's.... BUT they have a lot less potential problem areas. Especially if you found a 1995 DI. Then you wouldn't even have an engine ECU, back to the dizzy days! haha I'm interested in parts from your O3. Send me a message if your interested in selling/parting.
Oh and don't be afraid to ask questions. It could save you money.
Not sure if you read this or not but might want to:

There hasn't been a Land Rover offered for sale in the US since 1987 that didn't have a computer managing the engine. The first Range Rovers imported in 1987-88 with the 3.5L engine had a Lucas 13CU ECU controlling the fuel injection system. In 1989 when displacement was increased to 3.9L Rover switched to the 14CU system which was then changed to the 14CUX (the X denoting the ability to read codes with an onboard display). The 14CUX engine management system was used on every Range Rover Classic, Defender and Discovery through 1995. The GEMS version was introduced with the P38a in 1995 and them the Discovery in 1996 followed by the last of the Defenders in 1997. The Bosch engine management system came in 1999, like the GEMS, first in the P38a followed by the Series II Discovery. This system was used in the P38a through 2002 and in the DII through 2004.

The distributor has nothing to do with whether the engine is controlled by a computer.

The last Land Rover vehicle imported into the US, officially by Rover that did not have a computer managing the engine was the Series III in 1974. A little over 800 made it into the States before British Leyland pulled the plug on America. I owned one of these 800 a number of years ago. It was a glorified tractor.

Going to look at the 96 this morning

Also found a super clean 2000 D2 with about 100k that has all the records. New motor, new brakes, new xfer case, bling wheels with new tires (fodder to sell). Etc. anyway, this could be a good one and the 03 can become the parts truck. Or maybe it is a lemon since its had so much go wrong already.

I like the idea of the wrecked 02 though, since my 03 is really cherry and I can get the wrecked 02 for cheap.

I'm assuming the 4.0 will work ok, just a little light on power. I will still build my 4.6 in the mean time. I'm starting that next week by getting my block top hatted..
