Default Discount Tire says LR Wheels are "odd"

Was washing the Disco when I noticed I had a nail in a rear tire so I ran down toDiscount Tire to have it removed and plugged.I have Yokohama Geolanders (4 years old)on my truck with 40K on them andprobably 20K left, absolutely even wear all around. Anyway, the guy checks the truck then comes back and saysthere is some cracking (very minor) on the tires and that they would replace themunder warranty - no charge!

Great! I'll get Yokohama's again....onlythere's ahitch, Discount Tire has a service bulletin out saying not to install Yokohama tires on Land Rovers due to a fitment issuebetween them andodd OEM Land Rover wheels. Hmmmm....I looked at alternative tires for a bit then said I wanted new Yokohamas anyway. I said that the bulletin was very broad-brushed...C'mon,LandRoverinstalls MANYwheelsinMANY sizes and styles on MANY models. What exactly caused a problem? Anyway, considering my successful history with the tires and a lack ofdocumentationspecifying that my truck's wheels were a problem, I wanted the Yokohamas. So, After some calls and more talk mysales guy finally agreed to order the tires and that they would install themif theycould seat the beadwith no greater than 40 PSI.

Reading the bulletinit seems this whole problem stemmed from one shop damaging a tire(s) while putting them on anundisclosed Land Rover model. Littledid Iknow when I woke up this morning that I would be spending part of my day fighting for the rights ofLand Rover owners nationwide to install Yokohama tires on theirtrucks at Discount Tire.....LOL!

I do want to say that the guys at Discount Tires treated me great. Unfortunately, they were stuck with a very vague service bulletin. Will letyou know how the install goes........

That is so much BS, all wheels have to meet or exceed DOT standards.
I would just go to another tire company and get your tires warrantied there.

The problem stems from a poorly written service bulletin in that unintentionally (probably) tells all Discount tire stores not to mount Yokohama tires on Land Rover vehicles. It makes no sense at all.

Can't go anywhere else for the warranty, it's not from Yokohama.I boughttheextended warranty from Discount Tire. Actually, the store is being great. They volunteered to give me full credit for the "current" priceof the same tires, eventax, on anythingI want. They get nothing from me unless I volunteer to purchase another warrantyfor about $120.

The dumb thing is that someone had a problem at one store with one tire and one wheel on a Land Rover product so they essentially banned installing all variations of Yokohama tires on all variations of Land Rovers at over 700+ stores....someone just didn't think...!

I wouldn't blame Discount Tire I would blame the idiots who put out the BULLetin.
As mike said there is no way LR specific wheels could cause a problem because if they did the DOT would not let them pass. Good choice on getting them installed, sometimes when you know your right, you just KNOW your right!

You are the MLK of Yokohama/LR Wheel rights!

I hate Discount Tire, I have had nothing but problems with those guys.
Belle Tire, no problems at all.
But I am glad to hear that all is well with you getting new tires.
Let us know how it turns out.

To make things perfectly clear, the technical bulletin was written by Discount Tire and promulgated to all their stores. Problem is, it should have been given a sanity check by an adult.

Other than this instance I've had no problem with Discount Tire for over twenty years. In my experience they have well run stores and people who treat me right. Remember, the store was trying to give me aNEW set of tires under warranty - AT THEIR OWN SUGGESTION.The onlyrestriction was I would have had to pay the difference in price for anythingover the CURRENT cost of my warranted tires....which had gone up $30 a piece!Equal or less value tires= no charge!

In comparion. I stupidly bought an extended warranty ($499) for my large screen TV at CircuitCity four years ago. I started having problems a couple weeks ago, then realized my warranty was good till the end of the month....yay! I thought. WRONG! After hours on the phone, several e-mails etc. the warranty proved all but useless. The third party provider of the warranty threw every obstacle in front of me, including placing me on hold, referring me to total B.S. websitesandpatching me to other B.S. call centers.....Finally, I ordered the part online and fixed the TV myself. Compared to these guys Discount Tire is thecompany of the year in my book. Time to calm down and get an adult beverage...LOL

Dont take this the wrong way Dana, but this is why I say to NEVER buy a extended warrenty.
You did not need new tires (you knew that), you would have spent $20 for them to fix your flat.
I once bought their tire warrenty and they would not cover a manufactures defect, would not have cost them a thing, it was Pirellis fault, they wouldnt cover it.
Electronics warrenties are a scam and a half. It is always through a third party vendor and half the time they go out of buisness, wont cover anything or give you such a run around that you give up and go away.
A friend of my wifes bought a laptop, bought the extended warrenty. They will not fix her computer. Its "to beat up" they say.
Cell phone warrenties...you can buy a new cell phone online for less money than the warrenty would cost you.
Extended car warrenties, big money for little to no coverage.
Anybody who sells a extended warrenty gets commision on the sale. Best Buy gives away trips to the person who sells the most warrenties each month.
Car salesman get a bigger commision check.
The $500 that you paid for the extended warrenty on your tv that you bought 4 years ago...what is the price of that same tv today? $500?
When ever you buy something and they offer you the extended warrenty, take the price of the warrenty and put that money into a Money Market account.
Buy a new tv, $300 warrenty, $300 goes into your MM account.
Used car, $1500 warrenty, $1500 into your MM account. Dont have the $1500 and were going to finace the warrenty...$50 per month into your MM account.
New PC...MM account.
Tax refund...Money Market account.
The transmission goes out on your car...take the money out of your Money Market account.
Need new tires, write a check from your checking account.
Warrenty for new tires...put that into your MM account.
For anybody even considering a extended warrenty, dont do it.
Open a Money Market account and stick $50 per month into it. Make it a monthly bill that you must pay, cant afford $50, no problem, $40, $20, whatever you can afford, just do it.
When you can afford to put in more, then do so. Just make sure that you put something into it each month.
Anyway, sorry for the fatherly advice, I'll climb down from my chair now.

Why you young pup...LOL!

You are 100% correct about extended warranties, I understand the game. I bought the TV warranty against my own good judgment. Unfortunately, I had researched a lot in deciding which tv to buy: LCD? DLP? rear projection? Plasma? Well, I finally decided to get the a SONY rear projection LCD but read somewhere in a industry rag that that they sometimes burnt out pixels and that it might be worthwhile in this one case to get an additional warranty. Well, the tv was nearly 4k and with the new technology I thought it might be prudent to buy it...wrong! To be fair, with Circuit City closing I think think the warranty company was catching hell with everyone thinking there warranties were no longer good, they were overloaded with calls. Not that it makes a difference, It became too much of a hassle and I did things myself. Probably better in the long run because I obtained OEM parts etc.

As for Discount Tire though, I have no problems with them. I paid about $90 bucks for thier warranty 4.5 years ago and today they recommended I cash in on it and get a new set of tires valued at over $800. I've always had bad luck with tires and without the warranty I'll catch a piece of metal in the sidewall or something similar sure as heck.

And one other thing, my Discount Tire store has never charged me for plugging tires. We had a terrible hail storm last spring and everyone for miles has had new roofs put on thier homes. Bad thing is the roofers spread nails everywhere and I've picked up three nails in the last year. Had them all plugged, even rotated tires a couple timesfor $00.00.

I'll cross my fingers I don't get stuck with a defective tire like you did, that would suck.

You have a good Discount Tire, all the ones here in GR suck. The one on 28th street in Wyoming is the 2nd worst, the one by Lowes on RiverTown Parkway and Canal is THE worst one.

When you coming up? Another month and the snow will be gone, you'll have missed it if you dont hurry.

I won't be missing much besides, we usually get a nice dusting of snow here before Winter is over.

I'll be up in June or so, will stop to see my niece at Calvin College then up to see my brother and nephew in East Jordan. I was planning to ride my bike but ifyou volunteer to do the 90K service on my Disco I can bring that...[sm=smiley36.gif]

Seriously, we'll hook up when I come through....a nice meal and beverages will be on me [sm=partyparty.gif].
