The family drove our 2003 Disco 2 from Los Angeles to Las Vegas over this Memorial Day weekend. I have an Ultra-Gauge attached to the vehicle.


On the way from LA to Vegas which lasted from 8 am to 1 pm I observed my coolant temperature was fluctuating in a range from a low of 188 degrees F to a high of 216 F. Ambient temperature was between 100 to 102F.


On the way from Vegas to LA, we headed back at 2 pm and observed my coolant temperature in a range of 188 F to highs of 221 F. The temp alarms went off multiple times when temps hit over 220F specially when climbing uphill. I looked at the factory analog gauge and it was still pointing in the middle. Ambient temperature was between 102 to 107F.


Fortunately whenever the temp alarm over 220F sounded we were reaching the top of some hill so I let it go past the top and coasted downhill which caused the temp to go down several degrees. This happened about 4 times during the trip. Very nerve-wracking!



We made the trip back without any drama and the disco appears to be ok.

I checked the Rave manual and couldn't find the normal operating temperature range (or missed it). Are these readings normal or is it something I should be concerned with?

The factory temp gauge only tells you when it is to late. From my memory it has 3 setting cold normal and your screwed.

It maybe time for a low temp stat and a new radiator.

 

did you have the ac on? the only time my temps get high is when i have the ac on full blast(my ac aux fan is bad) something to look for.

 

Those temps are normal for a stock thermostat.

As mentioned on many other threads, replace stat with genuine LR grey 180° unit.

Make sure radiator is happy and fans are working properly.

 

220 is hot. X2 on the fan check

 

X2 on the 180* degree therm swap!

 

In addition to the very good items above don't forget silly things like radiator blocked by bugs, mud chiggers, leaves, etc. The radiator could also have rows closed off by Dexcool induced "DexMud", which makes you have a smaller radiator. If your IR thermometer shows more than a 10F variation on the fins from top to bottom then internal blockage is suspected. Radiators are about $200ish from places like Rock Auto. If poking about on radiator do not even touch the plastic lines and ports, they become very brittle with age.

 

Wow this Discovery 2 forum is really great. I had this post in the D1 forum by mistake and got no responses.


Just out of curiosity was it because I had a D2 and the D1 owners thought why is this idiot posting in the wrong forum?


Anyways thanks for your replies. So it sounds like I need to replace my thermostat and radiator - what would be a fair price for labor to do the above?

start with the t-stat you can do it yourself for $75.00, just be sure to get a LR tstat.

 

Atlantic British sells them for $47.95 soft spring thermostat.


Good idea, start spending the least amount to troubleshoot the issue. Is it easy to replace that part? I will search the forum I'm sure there is a thread out there regarding replacing the thermostat
