discovery 99 mk2 diesel starting probs
we bought a discovery nearly 5 weeks ago and we have only had it for about 6 days, first off head was skimmed and pessure tested, then fuel lines and fuel regulator done, then went back and they done glow plugs, we got it back again still same problem then they changed battery we again got it back and the next day went back to garage now got a new alternator, i went to car today to start took 4 goes on the 4th attempt my husband had a go and managed to start after about 20 secs of turning it over there was alot of dark smoke coming out of the exhaust whilst he was trying can anyone give us any ideas, it is not something that only happens when it is cold asit done it after a long drive and engine was warm ??????????
OK, so key here is to have the glow plugs cycle properly.
You can't just get in there and crank on the key.
When you first turn on the key - the glow plug heating light will come on.
You need to wait for that light to just go out - then attempt to start it.
If it is really cold out - a diesel can be hard to start.
Sometimes, let the glow plug light cycle. Then it goes out.
Turn the key OFF then back on again to begin a new cycle - then after about 5 seconds of that crank on it.
For a Diesel, you need to assure there is no air in the system.
You need to also make sure the diesel filter is clean.
Also - look under the bonnet and look for diesel fuel which is spilled on the engine or injectors
as this will give you a clue where a leak could be.
Once you get to know the diesel, you'll be just fine.
