Default Which Discovery do I Purchase?

Hello I am new to Land Rovers. Which discovery and year seemed to be the least problematic? I am a competent mechanic so minor to major fixes are no problem.

What do you want to do with it, and how much are you looking to spend?

If you are looking for the best used Disco, the 2004 model offers the best capabilities without the oil pump problems of the 2003 model. Late 2001/early 2002 through 2003 model Disco's do not have the center differential lock hardware in the transfer case. If you plan to off road this hardware is arguably essential equipment. the 1999 to 2000 Disco's are cheap and have a long list of improvements over the Disco I models.

Be aware any used Rover is going to need a bit of maintenance to be brought up to standard. Oil change, new tires and other parts may be needed. Whatever Rover you choose, make sure you sleep on the decision a night or two (unless it is in pristine condition). Of the several vehicles I owned, the Disco is my favorite by far.

Cheers,

Pete

x2 on the '04. It has the 4.6L engine, better brake calipers, and updated headlights.

Spike555 will say go with the D1 as they are easier to work on, and that's what he drives. The D2's are a little longer and wider than the D1.

You MUST use premium gas, and if getting a D2, have the front drive shaft rebuilt.

There is a double cardon joint at the t-case end with non-servicable u-joints that are prone to fail and take out your tranny, and repair cost for that damage averages $7000, while the cost of getting it rebuilt can be done for as little as $200.

Each used Rover out there is going to have some unique area of neglect, however major or minor. Disco I have better approach and departure angles and come with the center differential lock handle from the factory. My buddy's 1998 Disco I seems just as capable as my 2000 Disco II. Of course mine looks better and has a bit more legroom.

Cheers,

Pete

DII's have better ergonimics, DI's are just, well, better. It comes down to personal preferance. But what is your budget? What are you going to do with it?

Whatever you do stay away from the air suspension, dosent matter what car it is on, Cadillac, Lincoln, Lexus, it will fail and is exspensive to fix.
