Discovery-Enlighten me please...
Hello,
I am looking to buy a Discovery. I almost bought a 2001 last week, but there were a few small issues I found upon close inspection and it scared me off and made me think I should read up a bit more before I buy.
I am looking for a 2000-2004 Discovery. I want to pay cash and can afford between 8000-11000 depending on condition. The car I looked at was a 2001 with 70,000 for $8000 but I asked the seller if there was anything that would standout as an issue before I drove the hour and a half to go buy it. I get there and there are two cracks in the bumper, one was pretty big and it would drive me crazy so I know I would want to replace. The drivers side rear taillight was full of water. There were about 3 other issues. So I passed.
Anyway, I noticed that the 2003's seem to be priced very low. I then found out about the engine issue. Are all the 2003's bad? Is there a date range? Are the 2004's safe?
Should I just be looking for 2002-2000?
Thanks

That rear tail light issue is pretty common on early DII's.

Land Rovers will last forever if you take care of it.
The '03 oil pumps tend to fail anywhere from 40-60k, if caught early enough the oil pump can be replaced before there is damage to the engine.
But once you replace the oil pump you have done nothing but bought yourself time, another 40-60,000 miles.
