I am asking on behalf of my Brother-in-law who owns a 1997 V8 Discovery. The Landrover initialy hesitates under acceleration then picks up. On deceleration it sometimes backfires in the exhaust.

If this was our V12 Jaguar, I would say that the vacuum hose to the ECU was partially blocked, but with the Rover am not sure. Can anyone help?

 

How many miles on the truck?
When was it last tuned up?
What grade of gas is he using?
Is the air filter clogged?
How does it idle?
Is the check engine light on?

 

There is no vacuum hose to the ECU.
