Thumbs down Discovery II 2003 Fan Clutch Assembly

Hi All:

I have 125,000 miles on my disco II. Since its now cold in new england, the fan on my doesn't spin freely when I first run the vehicle. My understanding is that it should and will only turn on when the engine hits operating temperatures and needs the fan to cool the engine down.

I've been looking to just purchase and replace the viscous clutch itself but when I look online (e.g. rover parts), they want to sell the whole fan and clutch assembly for approximately $300. On eBay they appear to sell just the clutch (e.g. Hayden model no. 2991 but I have no confidence that they know if this part really does work for a 2003 disco II.

Does anyone know why the entire fan/clutch assembly would be required for a 2003 disco II? Thanks in advance for any advice,

Mark

In 2003 Rover went to a single unit fan and clutch assembly. For improved cooling at idle the Hayden 2991 will work but you'll need the fan from an '02 or earlier, then bolt the new fan clutch in place.

The fan blade you want is ERR4960 if I remember from when I did this last month.

Wow! I didn't expect responses so quickly. Thanks Robert and Drowssap! If I found a 99-02 fan clutch assembly would that work? Or, do I need the Hayden 2991 viscous clutch as an essential component for proper fitment on the 03-04 years? Hope this question makes sense.

Best,

Mark

This on my to comply with list also.

What's size and quantity of bolts needed to attach fan to the clutch?

Thanks.

Default Bolt Size

For anyone else doing this with the Hayden 2991 clutch, 4 bolts, 5/16" - 18 and 5/8" in length. NAPA only had bins for 1/2" & 1" lengths but found some hidden in those.

Has anybody played with other fans to see what chevy fan part numbers would be a direct fit? (chevy since the VC is from a chevy based on other posts)
Are there other part numbers that can be used for the fan, not super familiar with all the different models but looks like the defender fan is very similar based on pictures?

I am looking also to do a conversion but hoping there are other options besides the 99-02 fans

The Land Rover fans are cheap and abundant. Plus it fits the stock cowling, obviously. One-less modification is OK with me. There is a thread here that discusses an aluminum fan, but it's easy to get one with the blades reversed by accident on either party and the blades must be trimmed. You need only worry about a heavy-duty clutch which is the 2991 model by Hayden or Import Direct and is on the shelf at any auto parts retailer. This is it in a nutshell. No further trial and error is necessary
