Discovery II Epic Failure - codes included
#12
actually if its intermittent then its the coil pack. and seriously, a used one. Comeon for all the effort to put one in and the crap that it causes putting a used coil in is like putting a used wire on and hoping for the best.
when the misfire is 1 6 or 7 4 or 5 8 or 3 2 its a coil. even if a wire is bad then its managed to ground thru the coil and ruin both paths.
although this is far more common on a 03 and above because they got rid of the ground wire at the coil .

Rovin, do you suggest replacment of both coils or just the one with 5 and 8 on it? Also, it was not clear what you thought of the used ones.
I have found Autozone can get the coils, but they are $115 each. Guess I'll call the LR in on the far side of town and see how much they want...pretty sure they are really proud of them.
Thanks guys!!
As a note. What I've found so far is all the plugs have lots of black soot on them, some more than others. The wires didn't seem to have a good fit with the plugs. Guess I'll clean the wires up and put the copper Bosch plugs in and see....for now.
I suspected a bad tank of fuel, can't remember where I got it. This all started when I parked the truck outside on a 25 degree damp night and started it in the early AM. Ran like a top before that.

DII coil packs are $250 from AB.
I will also add that I've had good luck with all my used parts and replacing the coils is not that big of a job. Taking the off the upper IM is pretty straight forward the hardest part being getting all the hoses and crap off without messing them up.

Again, Thanks for the help guys!
I replaced the +4's with copper Bosch plugs and kept the Magnecor wires. I cleaned and "tightened" the connections on the wires. She started right up on all 8 and I even drove to the shop and had the codes cleared just incase we have another occurence. Started right up this AM and drove to work without a single miss!
So all I can think at this point is I got a bad batch of fuel with the last tank and it didn't fair well with the cold climate, platinum plugs and short drive.
If I have any other issues at this point, seems like the coils will be the next step.
Thanks,
David

random misfire
im having the same problem with mine. i just replaced the head gaskets reconditioned the heads, installed a new coil pack new wires and new plugs it ran good but it misfires for a few seconds turns the engine light on then clears up and runs ok and not every time, im goin to pull the plugs and see what they look like. does anyone know if the coil pack grounds through the bracket or is it just a mount?
