Default Discovery II - Misfire hard to diagnose

Hello folks,
I'm new to this forum, and I was hoping I can get some insight from rest of you LR folks regarding my problem.

About 8 months ago I bought a 2002 Land Rover Discovery II with 86k miles and "apparently" blown head gasket. I decide to do the work myself as I have done the same kind of work on my Audi in the past.

So, I replaced the head gaskets, water pump, t-stat, all belts, tensioners, I also purchased a set of rebuilt heads on ebay, put in new spark plugs ( Bosch) Ignition Wires ( Sti) and all new bolts ( manifold + heads) and when i put the engine back together, and started it up, the check engine light started flashing and I noticed right away that the engine was idling rough. I plugged in the OBD scanner which showed several codes among them Cylinder 7 misfire, and at some point the engine even started overheating..

I tried everything in my power to try to figure out why is this happening, but I couldn't come up with any solid answers. The oil in the engine looks clean without coolant present in it. The other thing I noticed is that when I open the valve cover Oil cap, there seems to be some pressure build up in the valve cover.

I've heard stories about dropped sleeves and I was wondering if maybe that's the problem with my engine as well. I'm at the point where I put a lot of time and money into this car, and I just don't want to keep investing money in it if the engine block is bad.

I guess the most important thing is to figure out if I have a bad sleeve, and if not, what's causing the misfire.
I would greatly appreciate any additional insight into the matter.

Regards,

SV

What are the other engine codes? An intake air leak could cause misfire. When I did my head gasket, I accidentally swapped the plug wires for cylinders 6 and 7 at the coil (they're right next to each other and actually cross over from LH to RH side) so you might check that.

Yup,
I already checked my wires and they're all OK. I used new Bosch spark plugs as well.

When I got it, the head gasket was blown, so It ran like crap. I started working on it right away and pretty much replaced the following:
1. New head gaskets
2. New cylinder heads
3. New Water pump and T-stat
4. New bolts for manifolds and heads
5. New air filters
6. New spark plugs and plug wires

So, here's what else I thought about replacing but never did:

- ignition coils
- 02 sensors
- catalytic converters

I think either of those could cause misfire.

We should all quit guessing till he decides to send us the current fault code numbers, otherwise we are all just guessing.

OK,
I finally found some time to pull the codes and they are plenty:

P0102 - MAF 02 or VAF low input
P0307 - Cylinder 7 misfire detected
P1884 - Manufacturer Control Transmission
P1590 - Manf. Control Vehicle Speed, Idle Speed Control Aux inputs.

I checked the pressure on cylinder 7 and it was about 40 LBS? The car only ran for about 3 minutes before I checked it. When i pulled the spark plug out, the center of it (the tip) looked kind of black.

I'm thinking about pulling the Bosch plugs out and going with the OEM product, which I think is Champion plug.
