Default Discovery Life Expectancy

I am a newbie, so new I am buying my first today. Its a 2000 with 120,000. The previous owner is a certified Land Rover mechanic from England. As long as I take care of this vehicle, how many miles can you get out of this engine?

No he is not! He has owned it from 90,000 miles. He was working for Land Rover at the time when he bought it from the original owner who had it from day one.

As long as you take care of it you can expect 300,000+ miles without a enigne overhaul.
If you beat the crap out of it you can expect 200,000 miles.

mine was babied from the first owner till 45k miles. it now has 53k on it and i take care of my vehicles. i use them, but they are cared for. so i fully expect the steel from my chassis to rot away long before my engine goes.

I would say take a good look under it. I think that says alot. are there lots of leaks? rust? dry rot on rubber? i think a vehicle is a lot like a shoe, it tells where its been on the bottom. if the previous owner neglected these issues, then that tells you something. im not saying if you have a leak that its bad, it is a rover! by the way my analogies may suck!

mine was spotless until i got hold of it. it looked like it was factory fresh,,,, not so much now. a winter of trails and mud have given the chassis a nice patina

what are you basing that on? Land Rover Owner's International magazine would disagree with you. check out there 20th Anniversary of the Discovery article

but anyway, as someone else mentioned the body will probably return to the earth before the engine quits

I would tend to say that Spike is a little generous with his mileage. I would say at 200K they need an overhaul. This is with replacing head gaskets a couple of times and various seals along the way. I have 120K on my bottom half, and I needed new bearings. Spun them in when I did my front cover. It still needs a full tear down, though...
