Default Do I Need New Exhaust Manifold Bolts?

I'm in the process of reassembly after putting in new head gaskets. RAVE calls for new exhaust manifold bolts but I've never seen that being mentioned through my research on this forum before starting the job so I just want to verify and see if it is necessary. Thanks in advance.

the Rave pretty much tells you to replace every bolt and peice of hardware on every job, but of course it is written by the people that are selling you the hardware.

It helps the Stealers justify there bill they can just point out that the factory says new hardware. You know the taillight bulb is $8 but we had to replace the 6 stainless steel screws so your bill is now $75.99

I can tell you that I did not replace the exhaust hardware, and have not had a problem, yet.

The head bolts yes, only because insteed of torquing the to pounds per foot like normal people, they want to torque by bolt stretch unlike everybody else (eccept Nascar motor builders).

No you dont need to. I would de rust them and use a tap and die to run over the threads if needed. I de rusted mine and they came out like new..

Thank you, drowssap & vandev. I'll use my original bolts then.

When you say de-rust is there a specific chemical that you used, or did you just run some degreaser/cleaner over them?

just hit them with a wire wheel if you have it, put some antiseize on them and toss them back in.

...and Porsche, and Audi, and BMW, and....well....damn near 1/2 of the motors not made in 'merica.

Yes, its called "purple power de ruster i got at advanced auto.. I put them in a plastic container and covered them and the stuff foamed up for about 30 minutes. It then goes back clear and they look like new.
