I know, that is my fear. Id rather fix it and not worry about it. It would always haunt me, in the back of my mind. The good news, i never drive more than 10 miles from home. I just wish I could definitively identify the problem, who is to say that replacing the starter does not fix the issue?

Ill probably replace the starter anyway. cheap insurance.

any idea how long I should allow for it? I watched some videos, looks a bit fidly, but I have replaced them in other cars.

this may be worse than it not starting bc I have to worry about it being unreliable. As opposed to broken.

I'll have to wait for to fail again before I can trouble shoot it.

unless there are any other tboughts.

thanks
The intermittent start can be caused by a starter going bad. When cold the gap is OK, and electricity will spin the motor. When hot the gap is too large, will not start. So try taking it for a good long drive, and stop, then try to restart. This is what happened to mine.

If you do get a new one, I have a Partsplayer from Amazon and have been exceedingly happy with it. Best4x4 turned me onto it. Made my original sound like a sick dog in comparison. Cheap too.

The starter isn't at all a challenging fix. Did mine when I was still in the early days of Rover ownership when I didn't know how to fix anything. Probably took about an hour, tops. A little tricky but not bad. Make sure to unhook battery- no offense, better safe.

Ordered a starter, seems like cheap insurance if nothing else.

I swapped one out on my 98 D1 (which started fine) just swapped as I planned on D/D driving and long trips. Installed the new one & it was night and day! Kept the old one as a spare/core (installed a D2 starter into the D1). It started up amazing afterwards!
