Default Does a Snorkle improve performance?

I was wondering if the Snorkle improves engine performance in any noticable way. It does seem to allow the engine to draw in cool outside air that is not pre-heated in the engine compartment which is similar to some system designed for sports and luxury cars. It also looks pretty cool and would definately help in fording water.

Thanks, Chris

A snorkle, if reversed will cut down on the dust intake, it will help bring in a little cold air for slightly better low end torque, out on the highway you can pick up 1/4 MPG and yes, if you do go in water over 36"s you stand a slight chance of driving thru it.

I always sort of figured that it would hinder performance by increasing air resistance, sort of like trying to suck air through one of those bendy straws. Unless you're cruising down the highway, then you may get sort of a ram air effect.

WEll, I'm kind of interested in one and the ones from AU say they are good even in the rain but Texas rain is another thing so I may do some more research.

I had always been sort of curious about this, so I googled "snorkel effects on engine performance". There's actually quite a bit of info.
I think rain can be a problem...

I have a Mantec snorkle and can tell no improvement in
power, mine has the intake that faces the back
and in places with dust it helps keep the intake clean, the
air filter stays cleaner longer.

It does sound like a four barrel carb when you punch the gas.

The Mantec is the sameone used on the Camel Land Rovers.

When weather is good and I have my windows down
I have had people ask what its for and most think that
its "Cool" its good PR for Rover Owners as most people
think that we are a stuffy lot, and its gives me a chance
to sway them to Land Rover thinking if just for a few sec's.
