I die a little inside knowing the *******/s that designed/engineered this truck are likely still walking this world...

I can't really answer that question but I do know that I am fully prepared to deal with these things.

Oh I should also mention that I have some pretty serious frame rust in the rear that I also have to fix.
Around here, a Land Cruiser with 120,000 miles is still a $20,000 truck, while a Disco with the same miles is $6 or 7000, xterra's are similarly priced and don't come with the Toyota Tax.

Disco's like to rust, don't they?!

I was gonna make this post haha. I like the Land Cruiser but man do they hold their value. I like the new xterra's but if I had to have another SUV it'd be a 2001 Montero.

Well, anything is possible. But for most, we discard the broken toy and find another. Putting $5K plus into a vehicle that is worth $2K is one of the reasons.

Can it be done? Yes, but you need to be in love with that vehicle for a long time.

Because one day you will see the next model up at a great price with all the bells and whistles you ever wanted....

Respect the Discovery II and it will respect you.

Problem is - you are ASE certified.
You may be working on other people's broken cars all day.

Then you come home and tired and you work on yours..

Don't do that.
After a restful weekend - work on your Discovery on Sunday.
And don't do it with beer in you.
And be in a good mood.

I mean - this is totally true.
I spent two weeks doing my heads in a parking lot - but I was in a good mood the whole time.
This is the trick to it.

My wife and I went down this same road and came to the conclusion that we would stick with the Rover engine for a few reasons.

First is that the Chevy will fit but is heavier (not really a big deal) but if we wanted to use the ZF4 tranny and stock t-case we would need an engine to tranny adapter from Marks4WD in Australia and which is designed for what they call a late model model petrol engine turns out to be very old on this side of the pond. Going this route also meant we could keep the original driveshaft but we would need a standalone controller for the tranny from England and this is very pricey.

Second choice is to use the Chevy engine and tranny but now you are limited to the 4L80E or TH400 and getting an adapter from the tranny to the Rover t-case from Ausralia again. This now moves the t-case back about 8" and requires new driveshafts and presented another new problem, front driveshaft clearence issues. Going this route puts the driveshaft really close to the passenger side of the tranny and may need mods done.

Third choice is dump the whole Rover driveline and go Chevy engine 4L80E or TH400 tranny and find a passenger side drop t-case that will bolt directly to the chevy tranny with no mods and get new driveshafts. This solution does not have our CDL as you would most likely be using the NP241 t-case which would require all new linkages to be fabricated to operate.
Then there is the issue if you go with the 4L80E tranny on a older chevy engine you will need a tranny controller again and if you stay EFI on the engine will will have to go with a standalone engine management system or use a Hotwire engine harness and do your own wiring on the stock GM ECU.

I see the best route so far and the route we are looking at is to rebuild the 4.0 with a sleeved (top hat liner) block, keep the ZF4 tranny and t-case new, all cooling system and go standalone and dump the Rovers engine management system and its overkill of faulty sensors. This would be the cheapest route and allow you to fix the truck on the fly should a problem arise with generic off the shelf parts and as long as it is properly maintained should last mechanically.

The last and best option is go 300Tdi diesel from a D1.
This makes the truck so slow but hey they aren't race cars but more like energizer bunnies and keep going and going and going.
Below is a pic of my friends 2000 D2 with the 300Tdi conversion done and it works awesome and for under $4000 complete.

Just my 2 cents worth.....
