Resurrecting this thread again to acknowledge its usefulness.

The barrel housing was damaged and the lock pin was broken on my new 2004, so I pulled the handle and pin off my 2003 but then had to re-key it. The photos and write-up here were invaluable!

FYI, you don't need to remove the two springs for the door handle to get the lock barrel out. Once you have the retaining clip and the plastic cover off, the barrel assembly will slide out when you insert the key.

Also, if you're really stuck and don't have a good stash of wafers handy, you can put in ones that are "close enough" and then carefully roll the whole barrel against a bench grinder with the springs and wafers installed and the key inserted. This will take off any protruding wafers and give you a smooth barrel assembly that can then go back into the housing.

I needed to resuscitate this old thread as well. Hoping someone will know if a key that turns the barrel left but not right indicates a wrong key (cut to chassis code) or a broken wafer or some other issue with the barrel. Someone pointed out that perhaps only top or bottom wafers are used. Perhaps its one or the other for left and right?

Does it help to wiggle the key, or insert it rotated 180 degrees? If so, it might just be that the barrel assembly is worn so there is enough play that the wafers aren't clearing the cutaways in it.
Having just had the thing open, it's not true that "only one side" is used. Each of the 8 wafers pushes outwards, and they all have to clear a corresponding cutaway.

I tried wiggling it and flipping over many times. Sprayed penetrating oil but maybe not enough. the fact that it turns ccw suggests it might be the right key, but then I know falcons up to at least bf would lock with any key so maybe not.

Does the same key work okay in the ignition? If so, you should be able to pull the door lock and clean up the barrel so that it turns in both directions. Good opportunity to replace the door lock pin at the same time.

The car is locked and keys stolen so don't know yet if the key works in the ignition. Cant really even remember if the ignition key that I had ever opened the door, though I think so. Would get a locksmith but the cost is $660+and insurance probably wont cover that plus genuine keys - and after talking to to all the local dealers, LRA and local landrover specialists I'm not entirely sure anyone they wont get caught out by a 20 year old car and slug me with a huge bill. Would rather open it myself and use the insurance on the keys. Also suspect the barrel is the problem now, not they key. Will go out to the farm and blow a gallon of wd40 through it, hit it with some tapping and vibrating and blow some air through. Hope its a stuck wafer.

Weird, thought I replied before but must have nerfed something. Keys and fob were stolen so can't get in yet. Trying to make sure it unlocks as insurance may not cover lots of unsuccessful locksmith attempts as well as new genuine keys, and it seems like no one is sure how these work anymore. Seems like barrel could be broken anyway with the key turning only one way. Will be doing the pin as soon as I get it open. Considering drilling it now and just getting a new door lock. But first will relube the hell out of it and try some tapping, air and vibration in case its a stuck wafer.
