Double Gaskets on Y-Pipe to Exhaust Manifold Joint
I am geting ready to do a transfer case swap which will involve removing the Y-Pipe to Exhaust Manifold pipe for access. This is what I am ordering in prep for the job:

I recollect seeing somewhere being mentioned that double gaskets are recommended on each joint. Did I remember this correctly? If yes, anyone know why doubling up on the gaskets is recommended? Thanks in advance.

because the flanges are not faced and not aligned too well...especially after 20 years.....but I have not had an issue with thick single gaskets... snug up the Y pipe firmly to the manifolds first, before adding the rest of the exhaust. I put stainless studs into manifolds, and use stainles nuts and washers. the copper nuts seem to strip too easily.
I'm experimenting with Permatex Red RTV Gasket Maker on the Y-pipe surfaces with a single gasket. About 1/16 inch bead, press gaskets on, set up for some time (15 - 30 minutes) prior to install helps keep the gaskets in place. Only one drive cycle, but so far so good. Will install on second truck soon.

I've done single, single + rtv, and even those fancy remflex ones. They all seem to work fine tbh. The main thing is to replace the studs if you've had a leak because they get super brittle. SS or standard is fine imo; whatever you're able to get for the job makes the task much less of a hassle later on.
