Drive Shaft - Maybe???
Any mechanic worth his/her salt can replace those u-joints. Just need a shop and a positive attitude. There is nothing special about it, just need the right part numbers for the replacement joints. I had to air hammer the cups out of one but it was gravy after that.
Wow, thank you to everyone. Spoke with the mechanic and I think he is actually excited about getting his hands on the LR. I told him about this thread and he really wants to see everything. Again, the good news is that this person is extremely reputable as an honest person and a great "old school" mechanic. He has found someone in town with a computer that may have the necessary software to read any codes that might be retrieved, if there are any.
As for my ability to look under the truck for damage - sadly, I can't. However, if it were a building, I do great site inspections!! The mechanic told me that he would show me everything if I wanted to get dirty. Dirt's not a problem.
Anyway, today the truck is in his hands.

If you have the ability to burn a CD then there's a link to the shop manual here: RAVE download
to the RAVE ISO image. You want this one: http://www.green-oval.com/data/lr/rave01.iso
You can burn it to CD and give it too him for reference.

I have been told that I have great hearing. The bolts were loose on the rear drive shaft. He said something about bolts had to be tightened and something else had to be adjusted but he was surprised that I could have heard the noise. He did think if I had not suspected something about the drive shaft(s), then something worse could have happened later because the three were loose but he did not elaborate on why the bolts and something else were loose.
Found a leak in the coolant that was causing the burning smell and that is being repaired with a kit from the Land Rover dealership in Knoxville. All in all, with the service, added oil change (my suggestion) and $35.00 for towing, my bill is less than $150.00.
As for the reduced power, he did not experience that for himself but we are going to take a test drive tomorrow together.
Thanks to all of of you for your help!!

Very good. Now get that front propshaft rebuilt ASAP because what I pictured above can happen at any time because of the lack of ability to grease the u-joints. Read the link on propshaft rebuilding for an understanding of what's required for both the rebuilding and for the ongoing maintenance.
Thank you, Tom. I will let Anthony (mechanic) read this message as well. He was surprised with all of the advice this site offers. I will post a picture soon. My vehicle does not have any whistles or bells as yet but soon......
Mike I am thinking of replacing mine ASAP. What do all think of this shaft?
