Drive or Ship?
what would be ideal is if i could get my buddy to ride with me
It's really not all that complicated. If you can afford to have it shipped, do so. If you can't afford to ship it, and you're able to take the time to go get it with a reasonable amount of money for fuel, food and lodging, then go get it and enjoy the ride. You can't worry yourself incessantly about whether or not it will break down- if it breaks down you'll deal with it, you'll have no other choice.
Good luck, and may the force be with you.
BTW, it's probably fine, just pissed because your buddy replaced it with a Jeep.

Rent a Aveo one way and drive to the truck, that will cost you like $100 including gas, drive straight through, no stops, 2 day rental.
Stay the night at your buddies place.
Then drive the truck back home.
I am betting that it is just a loose exhaust manifold or a bad exhaust manifold gasket.
And just a FYI...diesel oil is just fine, in fact unless you are running full synthetic it is preferred, especially in warmer climates.

I think it would be a cool adventure..just give yourself enough time to allow for problems along the way. Worst case scenario you break down, have to be towed to a auto transporter then have it transported home and take a bus home.
MJBrox, two pieces of advice for you.
1) Do not take your rover to Jiffy Lube, ever. I have friends in Richmond, once you get it home I can demo the oil change. It is easy and you can do it.
2) I am in Roanoke, VA area, lived in Houston for a short time a few years back, now back in Roanoke area. If you drive it back, go US-59 North out of Houston, I-30 East, I-40 East (long drive across TN), I-81 North, I-64 East to Richmond. Do not come across I-10 East out of Houston and up somewhere off of I-10, too many little towns with officials that like to mess with you along I-10 in Louisiana.
Whatever you decide, check out www.ROAV.org (Rover Owners' Assoc of Virginia)
Just re-read your last post, I do not have a problem making the trip, if I can work it out with my boss at work and home!! Work will not be a problem, but will have the one at home. We can change the oil before we leave, it is easy. Do you plan to fly down, or did you need the buddy to drive you down? Cheaper to fly. See which airport is closer to your rover, Houston Int. North of the city or Hobby Airport on the south side near the football & baseball stadiums.

I know how to change the oil, but I will not have a pan ect to do it.
I am all over ROAV already

Ok, I am going to have to make my decision today.
Yesterday I call the land rover dealer and they gave me someones name who quoted me $595
I should get the title on monday
Check with www.Adesa.com or www.manheim.com, the two largest auction chains in the country. One time, I had a car shipped by delivering it to the local auction site and including it in a shipment that was going to the auction site in my location, where i picked it up. I am estimating that it will cost you about $ 500. I did this two year back. Call them and see if they will do it for you.
Personally I would not drive it. I would spend 500 or 600 on shipping versus 250 on fuel plus keeping in mind that any breakdown will cost you 150 if you had to be towed 50 miles and this excludes repairs that can run into few more hundreds.
For some reason the movie "Plane, trains and automobiles" come to mind, while writing this response.
