Default Dual Batteries Research!!

Im doing some research on doing a dual battery installation in my Disco. There are two type of systems. Keep in mind that I will be doing a winch and lights later.Which type of system would be perfect of me?

I would just hook the two batteries together, that is the way they do it on big trucks, farm equipment and HD equipment of any kind.
The alternator will charge them both.

You dont "really" need 2 batteries unless you want to run stuff overnight when camping / touringfor example, like a fridge or similar to prevent the starter battery being flattened. In which case you have say an Optima red top "starter" battery and a Yellow top "deep cycle" for running the fridge etc....

Even if you add a winch and lighting the standard vehicle system will cope with all of it as long as the engine is running.

I agree with Urban Panzer. As long as you have a good battery that meets the minimum requirement of CCA for the winch you should be fine. Now, if I went on trips where a lot of winching is common, or you're the "recovery" guy on the trail I would consider a 2nd battery given the amount of extra winch usage.

Or you can upgrade to a higher output alternator.
With a 1000CCA battery and a 200 amp alternator I think that youi could do just about anything.

Isn't the idea for dual batteries also for the redundancy? IE for overlanding etc...

I think the real idea of dual batteries is so that you can run extra gear without draining the battery to low to start the truck. So when you are camping you can run a 12v air compressor, lights, cell phone charger, 2 way radio, etc.
I also think it is for high demand situations, if you have lights on the roof for example, you have all the lights on and are using the winch, that is alot of power being drawn and if you are drawing more power than the alternator can put out eventually you will run the battery dead even though the engine is running.
Not much of a problem with a diesel, but with a gas engine...
I do think that for the average person you only need one battery though.
