Trim your front bumper in front of the tires and the rear quarter panel for better approach and departure angles.

Before you start worrying about the cheap ones, look at your tires and a lift, other wise you shouldn't be trying much off the road.

With a good set of tires and a experianced driver these truck can go just about anywhere.
A good recovery strap, your Hi-Lift jack as a winch, machet, fox hole shovel and a good cell phone and you are pretty much set for everything but the mud bogs and rock crawling.

Disco I's are very capable stock. Good tires (which you probably have already) are the best place to start.

I recommend removing the rear anti-roll bar and buying quick disconnects for the front. JKS-2001 (part number) work on Disco II's with a little grinding of the sway bar ends. They may work on Disco I's also, assuming there is not any difference.

Maintenance! Don't forget to make the Rover reliable before modding it. Change all the fluids and make sure the brakes, plugs, and wires are ready to go.

Differential guards may also be worthwhile. Because the diffs are the lowest point on the Rover they tend to meet the ground first.

Cheers,

Pete

If you're looking at cheap or free upgrades I wouldn't go with the 3" lift. They're more expensive because of the other parts needed to keep the driveline angles. If you go 2" (even RTE which always nets a little more lift) you won't have to worry about that. I going to run the 2" for a while until I feel the need for more, which gives me more time to save for the 3".
