Default Electric cooling fan question

I am pretty sure mine is dead, but before opening up the grill. Should the fan spin freely with engine off ?

Mine has no movement at all, I can mark it but I am pretty sure it is toast. I would expect it to rotate.

Fuse is good no codes.

And I am sure I will have more questions that seem less than brilliant

Yep, you should be able to spin it freely by hand.

Thanks Alex - another trip to the wrecker. I was pretty sure that was the case.

Remember you can rebuild it. If it's not burned up and just needs brushes, you can take the cap off the motor and put new brushes in.

That is the plan so far, drop a different motor in to it once I get the fan out. Looks like it has been dead for a while.

So can I jump in on this? Mine still works, but will blow a fuse after a while. I think that means it is trying too hard to work and is on its way out.

That said, where do you get new brushes for them? Every one I've found in yards was seized.

@longtallsally still working on it mine was toast - the brushes had worn a grove in the stator Brushes were viable but the housing was full of black crap, and even after cleaning it would not rotate.

But blowing fuses could be from a heavy draw by the motor.

I am off to the wreck on Saturday to pull one from from one of the vehicles below, I will let you know how it works out.

From another forum

The AC Condenser fan motor for a DII is the same as for the following vehicles (see table below). I got one a few days ago from a 2000 Toyota Corolla and installed it no problem ($20.00). You can only buy the complete assy. from LR and it's $350.00. I found out about this because mine failed and I did not want to pay a lot of money. I went online and started looking at pictures of condenser fan motors from 2000 MY vehicles. When I came across the one from the Corolla It looked the same. I went to the salvage yard and it was identical.

AC DELCO # 1580341, for a new one. $100.00

Or you can hit the salvage yards.

Default AC Coolant Fan

I just did this job about two weeks ago. I ordered a fan motor from Amazon and it worked like a charm. The wiring on the motor was even a direct match. You may have to sand the back of the fan down a bit.
Give it a try: Amazon Four Seasons 35110 Radiator Fan Motor. A little pricey at around $68 bucks, but it was a lot better than from either Advance or Napa. JEFIII

Picked up 2 from a wrecker both fit the housing no problem but were maybe 3 1/16ths short. Spent a good hour sanding the base of the fan down until I got a clean spin.

When I wire it up my plan is the use spade connectors so I can do a simple switch over next time. Fans motors that fit are really easy to find and run about 30.00 up here in Canada.

I pulled one from a Tracker and one from a Odyssey, the exact same motor.
