Default Electric Fan relay?

My disco got stuck a few weeks ago. while trying to get free, it started to heat up. hot, muggy and stuck in mud. it didnt overheat, I shut it off but no electric fans turned on. Also, the electric fans were turning on and off in the middle of the night with the vehicle turned off and armed (different night). this seems to be a faulty relay to me, they turn on when the a/c runs, does anyone know the location of the relay if there is one? 98 disco 1

Electric fans? I had no idea a 98 stock disco I had those. Mine has a fan clutch etc. It does sound like a relay problem, but to my knowledge their aren't electric fans on a stock 98 disco I... Is it aftermarket?

How many miles on your truck oljohnboy?

well there the condensor has the electric fans on the front, it seems that people with disco 1's have mentioned the fans cutting on when hot, i thought they were just for the condensor. i have a fan clutch, didnt know if the electric fans did serve as additional cooling. if they dont thats cool, she runs cool all the time, just when i was sitting in the mud givin her hell she heated up really quick. i still need to find out where a relay would be that would be energizing the fans with the ignition off! British electronics rock!

Sounds like you need to go out and get reacquainted with your truck, all Rovers have electric fans along with their mechanical ones.

As for this question, did your fans get mud all over them, have you power washed all the mud off the fans and out of the radiator?
This is nor a relay issue, but a bad sensor/and or ground issue.

sorry first for slow reply mike, they did get soaked in the mud. i think water did get in something, thats why it caused the fans to start switching on and off. where would be the sensor be? also, since those fans are sandwiched between the grille and radiator, where would be a good place to start to look at the wiring?

The fans are not able to come on by them selves, they are triggered by 2 different sensors and if one of the sensors is acting up, it could cause them to shut off. When the engine is off, there is no way for the fans to turn themselves on, that is why I am thinking a ground or short.

that makes sense mike. something tells me that this is gonna really SUCK! well I will just start checking connections and work my way across the engine. When she gets wet (like soaked beyond normal driving) she also starts to idle rough, apparently my disco is half cat.
