Default Engine Noise

I have read the myriad of posts around engine noise and diagnosing over the interweb. So, I know what I am getting into here.

Over the last month, the noise occurred maybe 10% of the time. Not enough to correlate to temp, I have the Extinct thermostat, it rarely gets over 190. I have actually stopped monitoring it at this point. Subjectively, it is probably quieter once I installed the inline thermostat. Even more so than the 180 stock thermostat.

Given the inconsistency of the noise, I have been unable to replicate it in a predictable fashion. With a stethoscope I cannot seem to pinpoint it. It seems to go away every time I pull out the stethoscope. Maybe that is the solution, to carry a stethoscope.

Engine pulls good, no codes. In fact the noise seems to go away at higher RPMS, highway speeds.

Unless I find out otherwise, I think my best bet is to fix this engine, as opposed to finding another and refurbishing. I have done so much to this truck, I am not sure I want another project.

Does anyone have an opinion on what could be causing this noise? The oil always looks good, Rotella 40wt, usually synthetic. Does not burn or leak. I have 136k on it at this point. I am trying to decide if it is worth sending an oil sample out to test it, if it will tell me anything of value. Or, drop the oil pan and see what the lower engine looks like. I am inclined to think it is the valves, lifters or something up there.

Appreciate the thoughts.

That sounds like the classic slipped liner. Does is ever do it below 170 degrees? Have you checked the oil pressure?

If it is that thud I agree with Extinct likely a slipped liner

Being in the middle of a head gasket replacement and discovering that my #4 cylinder liner had slipped up, yours sounds like the start of slipped liner. It could take you years to get the full bore rattle. Had I not blown the other HG I might have just let this rattle go on forever. My cost right now for doing this myself is approx. $700 which includes having a 1/2" steel 4"x"5" plate drilled to accommodate bolts, dry ice to shrink the liner so it could be pressed down, HG kit from Atlantic British, new lifters, having the heads cleaned and milled, new thermo, some tools, several pizzas and a boatload of coffee.
It has been a fun project, mainly done to keep this on the road (175,000), as i am not going to spend $7,000 on a new engine for a car that is worth $2,000 on a good day. I have zero idea if my sleeve press down is even going to work or for how long.
Why are you using synthetic oil? Dinosaur oil is the recommended.

I get that sound from time to time on my 03. HG was done by a LR shop years ago by previous owner. I just chalked it up to a likely slipped liner but, Extinct’s t-stat mod has helped it slightly. I’m not trying to put a new engine in it due to budgetary restrictions, however these trucks in some parts of the country are very desirable. Hate to tell you but, it’s worth more than 2k now. And with a new engine you would get your money back with the right buyer I believe.

Thanks, I did check oil pressure about a year ago, was high.

The 170 degree threshold makes sense to me, but even when it is warm I do sometimes not have the tick.

Matt, did you pull the engine? How much time do you think you have into it? I would love to have a refreshed engine. Where did you get the liners?

I do want to keep it, just wanted some input on this. I do think I am going to tackle pinning it. I figure over the last 7 years of owning Discs I have been extremely lucky with maintenance. There was a post on here about a guy that pinned them by removing the oil pan, seems like an easy route to investigate the problem. I actually think it was a shop in Jersey, might take it down there to save the headache. But, I am not afraid of doing it- just a cost benefit analysis.

I use rotella synthetic sometimes bc that is what they have in stock. I only drive it 5k miles a year, oil changes are mostly bc I am looking for something to do on a Saturday.

I got ahold of Chris, going to drop it off in a couple weeks. Seems like he knows what is going on it with repair, cautiously optimistic about it. Contact info below.

Well if you know anyone who wants to step up and bid me for my car I'm happy to listen, I work on Wall Street and we look at things on a Return on Investment basis. The ROI for putting in new engine just is not there. I don't care about the fact that somebody just paid $20,000 for a 04 D2 on bring a trailer. That person just proved PT Barnum's old adage about suckers.

Red- I did not pull the engine. I do not have the equipment, space or time. All I did was pull the heads. When I was getting ready to start putting it back together I noticed that the liner of #4 cylinder was above the surface of the block.
here is the thread I did:
https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...cience-105601/
For me this project started when I smelled and then saw coolant peeing out between #5 and #7. As far as I can tell, this block had not been apart since it was put together. As another poster pointed out to me, I should consider myself way ahead of the game if I am doing this for the first time at 175,000 miles.
