Engine overheated!?!?!?!?!

Engine overheated!?!?!?!?!
98 disco w/ 170k, very well maintained. A couple days ago my overflow res cracked and the engine overheated. The needle just was reaching the red line when I shut her down. I replaced the res and everything was good for two days and yesterday I had a new sound between 25-40mph that sounded like a rocker or valve clatter. Now this morning I have coolant leaking from the front of the motor and dripping off the bottom pully. I drove my kid to school andthe noise is gone and itsnot leaking any more. (yes I mad sure it was full of coolant). My question is, could I have killed the engine or is it just a water pump? How can I diagnose the problem?
Any help would be very much apreciated.
Thank you,
Dave k.

RE: Engine overheated!?!?!?!?!
First, when your engine over heats, never turn it off, pull off the road lower your windows and turn the heater on the hottest position and fan speed. By doing this while the engine is idling you will cool the engine off quicker and not cause hot spots to build in the engine.
Now for today, take it to your favorite shop, have the pressure test the engines coolant system for leaks and also do a chemical block test to check for blown head gaskets. Seriously, your engine can a nd will drop a sleeve if it keeps getting hot, then you are looking at a new block.
