Default Engine pulling question

Well, that sweet running engine I built last year is not running so sweet anymore... Cyl 6 is all scored up with tons of blow by. Have it just about ready to pull out.

I have never pulled or installed the engine with heads and valve covers on. For some reason I thought it was easier this way.

Can the engine be easily pulled and re-installed with heads and valve covers on?

Too bad about your engine! yes, you can remove the whole thing at once ( with the heads, exhaust headers, and upper intake on). If it comes out, it can go back in the same way. But I would remove the hood, radiator, secondary air pump, coolant tank, battery box, and brake booster, and drop the down pipes....basically clean out the engine bay of everything so that you have room.......

Thanks! Yeah I’m bummed, but it will be a fun project.

I don't remove the brake booster, but year the radiator and fan. Top bellhousing bolts are accessible by unbolting engine mounts, jacking engine up, removing engine mounts, and then lowering engine down.

Thanks for the responses.

I now plan on pulling it out as complete as possible = I can install as complete as possible.

I do have the lower intake out. Ok to use the threaded intake manifold holes in the heads to lift the engine - 2 on each side?

You could probably get away with using intake threads into head (at least two on each side!), but I would not do that. Risky, as these are smaller bolts that do not thread into head very far (compared to using head studs) Why don't you have the two lift 'eyes'?

Yeah, I wont be doing that. For some reason, I only have the front lifting "eye". Where does the rear mount to? Threaded holes in back of head?

Yes threaded holes in the back of the head. I’m not sure which other bolt holes you’re referring to, but because the ones on the back of the head are horizontal, the bolts will be in shear making the bolts, not the threads, take the load. If you use bolt holes that are vertical the bolts will be in tension, making the threads take the load (which is not a good idea).

I got away with just taking the hood off and the upper intake

yeah, the holes on the back of the PASS head are just like the ones on the front of the DRVR head......since the heads are interchangeable...
