Engine Replacement Questions
I am at a total loss. I followed the thread about pinning the sleeves and it lasted 5 days and this morning it is right back to ticking so now I guess I have to replace the motor and I am not sure it is worth it. But a few questions before I give up. Mine has secondary air. Can I get a motor without it and just strip the system off? If I do is there a need to change the computer? Is there a SN or some thing on the motor to ensure I don't just get another crap motor? Where would I even begin to look for a new motor? Last question being what if I want to switch to a diesel? Do any of the accessories swap over or does everything have to be changed i.e. Alternator, A/C compressor, ect.? I know that it is my fault I did not look into this more before I bought it, I really thought it was lifter chatter.

I don’t think so. It has new lifters, push rods and rocker arms. I know 100% the sleeves were slipping because before I pinned them I found a small broken piece of the block in the oil pan that the sleeve had broken off the block at the base. I must have just not pinned them well enough.

Recovery Vehicle
With a spray water bottle you can squirt the side of the motor that is ticking to cool it off right when it had heated up just enough to tick. If that causes the tick to stop then you know a couple of things such as the tick being heat related and which cylinder is the culprit. Some ticks may be oil pressure related instead of heat related.
Then you could just pin that one cylinder. You can do this with the motor still in your Disco.
Also, I'd consider adding a healthy dose of TurboMaxx additive to your oil. It's a fantastic product for cutting down lifter noise, valvetrain clatter, etc. This is the easiest thing to do. Drive for 15 minutes after adding. Let the motor cool. Restart and see if your tick is "fixed."
Another way to stop sleeve ticking may be to use all metal Cometic headgaskets. I do this. Maybe it would work for you.
Might be worth draining the oil and dropping the oil pan to mark the sleeves or even pin/wedge them from below as a different way to attack your problem.
I wouldn't think any other Disco motor would give you much of an advantage over the above. Probably end up doing some variant on any "new" motor, as well, anyway.
