Default Engine tap

I am a new member to the land rover community
greetings
I just purchased 2004 disco 2
Listening to it run , I can hear a tapping like sound
When I kneel down at the front passenger wheel well.
I'm thinking its in need of a valve adjustment
any thoughts??
Thx
Jeff

I have the same issue, it could be lots of things but one thing it’s not is a valve adjustment issue. Rover V8’s have hydraulic tappets so valve lash just isn’t a thing on these engines. It could be anything from a collapsed lifter, to an exhaust leak to the dreaded slipped cylinder, tough to point you in a better direction without more information. Does it tap right away or only when warm, under load, etc? Do you hear the same noise from the passenger footwell?

Very common, most common is a slipped liner. Three possibilities:

1. Low oil pressure - resulting in valve train ticking. Usually caused by cracked oil pump or walked cam bearing. You can test oil pressure for definitive proof.
2. Slipped liner - typically only above 190 degrees f. You should note what temperature it starts ticking at. You may be able to go to a lower temperature thermostat and correct the noise.
3. Exhaust leak - you can shove a leaf blower or shop vac blower up the tailpipe, tape it sealed, turn it on, soap the exhaust manifolds and gaskets with windex or 409. Bubbles indicated leaks.

I had a loud like 10 feet away noticeable tapping. I switched to rotella oil and it went away slightly and then swapped for a 180 thermostat and it’s gone completely and had been for 15k miles. For some reason it would only knock at high temps which were above what the 180 thermo allowed. Genuinely was close to tearing the motor apart but someone suggested I try those
