1997 DISCOVERY 188K TAPPING GETTING WORSE HAVE FLUSHED AND ADDED LUCAS WHAT YEAR ENGINES WILL FIT TOO MUCH $ INVESTED TO STOP

The tapping could be duetoa number of reasons which Lucas won't fix, but which aren't a reason to give up on the motor. You might have a bad lifter, toolittle/ too muchvalve pre-load, there might be an exhaust leak from your exhaust manifolds, etc... Has a mechanic with experience in the Rover V8 engines looked at this??

There is no exhaust leak and knocking sounds low in the engine maybe arod, dont trust local dealer.

Best thing would be to have a guy that works on Rover V8s all day long have a look at it.Are there any specialists in your area? The second closest thing would be taking it to guys that specialize in American V8s (since this engine started life as a Buick/Olds 215 "rocket" motor in the 60's before the whole production line was sold to Rover).
