engine tapping noise
Over the weekend a few problems came up on my disco 1. 1997. You masterminds fixed the one. The cruise control did have a cracked hose up at the throttle. Hope that will fix the cruise next trip out. The more serious one is the engine tapping noise. It always has a very small tap on the right side of the engine. This noise over the last few hundred miles gets to be loud. I took it down to show a local mechanic and by the time I got to the shop the noise again was quiet. My friend and I thought it might be a lifter . The disco has 83000. The last thing is that now the service engine light has come on. The check engine light is off and I read no codes on the computer. Any clues?
If your service engine soon light is on that is your emissions service reminder. If you go to www.discoweb.organd click on the tech tab you will find the reset emmissions reminder link, or maybe its the service engine soon link. Either way, scroll and you will find it.
As far as the noise goes, it could be a cracked exhause manifold, very common on these trk's, but that usualy makes noise when cold and then goes away when hot.
So if the noise is there when hot and not when cold then I would say it is a lubrication issue. What weight of motor oil are you using? Are you using full synthetic? How about oil filter, what brand? When was the last time you changed the oil?

Don't forget cam lobes.
After about a year of trying to get the dealer to hear the tapping noise with my truck,I finally pulled into the dealer and got them out to hear the noise. The noise lasted for20 secondsthen stopped but, they finally heard it. The motor was replaced with 56,000 miles. It was covered by my extended warranty. If you do an engine flush and the noise is still there, you have a problem.
So check out your cam as well.
