Default Engine Tick and Drivetrain Vibration

Hi Everyone!

I've searched around for some answers on a engine tick and some drivetrain vibration but no luck so here goes-

'04 Disco II, 75,000 miles. Previous service history unknown but sure it was somewhat neglected.

There's a slight but noticeable ticking sound and gets louder with higher rpms, maybe a sticky lifter? I'm about to do head gaskets and thought doing an engine flush then dropping the oil pan to clean the oil pickup screen might help... Any suggestions?

Also, at 75mph there's a very noticeable driveline vibration; everything is smooth up to 75. I've had the tires rotated and balanced and rebuilt/balanced the front driveshaft but have not looked at the rotoflex coupler in the back; could this be my culprit?

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Andrew

Rotoflex could do it. Easy check.

I would flush with tranny fluid before doing the head gaskets, but take an oil pressure reading before you do anything.

Also, count the number of grease fittings on your front drive shaft, if you have 3, you are OK if only 1, get that shaft rebuilt/replaced so you can grease all your u-joints.
As for the head gasket job, Atlantic British is a good place to buy your gasket set, t/stat and new stretch bolts. Also consider replacing your wires with a good set of 8mm wires.
Roto flex could also be the problem.

Have you serviced the wheel bearings? How long since you greased your driveshafts? Go out and pull on your frront wheels and check for play.

no i have not checked wheel bearings,
About 3k mi ago I greased rear joint and gave pump or two to the drive-shaft (grasing gun broke - so i gave up on that)
By pulling on the wheels you mean pull on on the top sideways --- to see if it goes in and out?

grease both shafts every 3K or oil change.

Pull them any way you can and check for loosness. If it is vibrating your shifter, something is about to give out. That is too much.
