Extended Warranties

RE: Extended Warranties
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!
Most extended warrenties dont cover much and they are overpriced.
I am assuming since you already have the truck and are looking for something once your factory warrenty runs out you will be paying cash for the warrenty.
Take that cash and stick it into a Money Market Account, it will grow and if you need it you can take it out penalty free to pay for major repairs.
Minor repairs you pay for yourself.
If you need to finance the warrenty then you are going to lose money hand over fist. The warrenty has no cash vaule, so you cant sell it if/when you sell the truck. If you total it in a accident your insurance company will not pay for the warrenty, only the truck.
It is foolish to pay interest on something that has no real value.
The most expensive repair that you are looking at on a DII is a head gasket job, about $1500. The price of the warreny will be at least $2500 for a good one, so even with the warrenty paying for that repair you are out $1000.
The smart money is to save the money and pay for repairs yourself. If you take care of the truck and stay on top of the maintence it will be less problem matic.
Just noticed that you have a 2003, does it fall in the VIN# range of the bad oil pumps?

RE: Extended Warranties
Man, this is a tough one. Other forums that I have been on...a guy had a '03 and the oil pump went out, he had a extended warrenty and they would not buy him a new engine. They claimed that he voided his warrenty buy putting on the wrong sized tires when he bought new ones. He went up one tire size which is perfectly normal and safe.
Another guy had his engine fail and again his warrenty wouldnt cover it because he didnt have the oil changed at the LR dealer.
So this is a tough one. A new engine is $7,000. A good warrenty is $2500.
For your case I would look up warrenty companies and read the fine print, then read it again. Sleep on it and then read it one more time making sure that you understand all of it.
Look at several different warrenty companies, read reviews on each company.
Take your time, read the fine print, then read it again.
Here is what sucks, the oil pump normally fails around 50k, so you should know pretty soon if you have a bad oil pump or not. You have a 50-50 shot at having a bad oil pump and needing a new engine.
If you catch it early you can fix it half way cheap.
To late and you need anew engine.
