Engine and Water Pump: The following parts of gasoline and diesel engines: pistons, piston rings, piston pins, crankshaft and main bearings, connecting rods and rod bearings, camshaft and camshaft bearings, timing chain and timing gears, intake and exhaust valves, valve springs, oil pump, push rods, rocker arms, hydraulic lifters, rocker arm shafts and water pump. Surely IRO 12k miles / year and 2 - 3 years ownership would be between $25,200 and $36,000 @ between $0.70 and $1.00 per mile... $2,500 for 45,000 miles would be $0.05 per mile... $0.07 per mile if you only do 36k miles.

Personally, I think extended warranties are a waste of money... choose the car carefully and bank the $2,500 against mechanical breakdown in the next 3 years. If it doesn't need any 'emergency surgery' during that time, keep the cash and bank the next 3 years worth of warranty money (so now it's $5k+) against breakdown in the future. Either that, or sell it, buy another and keep on adding to the warranty pot. Before long you could build a brand new one with the cash you've saved.

Fair enough... if you're not mechanically minded or if you really really need the peace of mind - otherwise avoid.

Thanks for your opinion. Normally I'd agree with you but these 03'Discovery's have a reputation for premature failureof the oil pump and head gasket failures are common to most years from what I've read on here, not to mention door lock actuators. A head gasket failure alone would more than justify the cost of the warranty.

I will most likely be selling this truck before I hit 60k...70k at the very most. The question is; what are my odds of making it to that kind of milage without any major failures? If it's 70% or less, I think I would opt for the warranty.

 

Just so you know where I'm coming from here: A couple or years backI bought a 2000Jeep Grand Cherokee w/97k miles with no warranty.Shortly after I bought it I noticed my oil pressure gauge dropping below minimum at idle. The dealer checked the gauge and replaced the sender unit...still low pressure. So then they replaced the oil pump, the old one was out of spec and so we thought we had solved the problem, but the new one didn't improve the pressure to normal, it was only slightly better. It was determined that the crank journal bearingshad already been damaged from running on the low pressure. So I ended up getting a new engine installed. After all told I was $5,000 poorer. I'd really hate to have to repeat that costly lesson.

But then again the milage was much higher to begin with. And I found the service records for my Disco in the glove box...the previous owner complied with the maintenance schedule to the letter! Every 6mo/7500mi. Most of the time the 6mo expired first, so It has been serviced up to the specs of the recommended37,500 service, even though it only has 33,000 on it. The next one isn't due till 45,000

 

I can't tell you clearly enough; IF YOU CAN EXTEND A WARRANTY, DO IT. In my case I was able to extend the factory warranty through land rover, which is the best bang for your buck. I also looked at the exact warranties you've posted which were pretty good. These trucks are great, but parts and labor are expensive. The more you can do yourself the better, and the more the warranty covers...even better yet. I bought by '04 is pristine mechanical and cosmetic condition and all services were up to date. In the past 8 months I've had replaced:
Door lock actuators
ABS module
Wheel sensor
Front drive shaft
Sunroof drains
The warranty has already paid for itself and I've got 25K and a little over 2 years to go. And the head gaskets and valve cover gaskets are original. Guess what's next?

Extended warrenty's are almost alwaysa bad deal. However, Land Rover would be the only vehicle I would have an extended warrenty for.

Save yourself a lot of grief and get the warrenty!

 

Don't do it I have had very bad experience with extended warranty companies. I had a transmission go out with only around 40k miles and the ext warranty would not cover it afterI had to pay a shop to take the transmission apart and they said it was something that wears over times etc etc. just gave me an excuse and I was stuck with twice the bill I would have had if I had just fixed it myself.

 

Unless you can extend the factory warranty, you are rolling the dice with an extended warranty company. Like bullit said, on most of these warranties you have to PAY yourself to PROVE that you were not negligent, thus resulting in the fault. Even if they pay for the repair, you usually get stuck with the bill to prove it. Extended warranties seem to be a sham to me.

Also, did you read the fine print? 2500 dollars, no claims, you get a refund. So, if you make a claim, and it is rejected, you are still out your 2500 dollars. Take that money, put it in a CD, or a mutual fund. Your rate of return is better and unless you blow up your engine you're good.
