Extinct thermostat modification FYI
You do not have to remove the engine to make this modification. There were no directions in package, so l just went ahead and tackled this the best way l knew how. After removing engine, it became somewhat apparent that it wasn't necessary. So, to those that follow in my footsteps...don't...lol.
No, l know there's a sticky on this topic and will delete this BS post eventually. But...out of all the mods l've done over the years...this is by far leaps and bounds the best!!! It's idiot proof, me being living proof of that, and saved another rover guy from throwing in the towel. My 04 over heated last summer, got it home and said...l'm through with these things! Then, after reading review after review...bought the modification. It's so easy, the change over, that it took less than an hour. Filled both upper hoses, after flushing system, installed stat and fire it up. No f'n bleeding, no issues at all...just threw scan tool on and went for a ride. Ran at 180.9 with heater on (and this thing has never-ever had heat like this before...it was pathetic before) and 187.8 without (84° and humid today). It's almost unimaginable...never having to lose blood getting at that damn british designed thermostat out. Figures though, took an American to straighten out their bul* chi* engineering (and l use that term loosely).
So, couldn't be happier with this set up and appreciate Extinct taking the time and effort to put together the modification. Actually, if he was here l've give him a big kiss...and l'm as straight as a new nail...lol. Yeah, probably could have piece mealed the systems parts myself, but...he's helping the group...and l want to support those that go the extra mile for others.

After installing the in-line thermostat modification I came up with 3 types of D2 owners:
1. Those who have no idea the issues of the original thermostat and temperature gauge
2. Those know know of the issues and have installed the 180 degree thermostat and a second temp gauge but are continuously watching the gauge waiting for dread.
3. Those who have installed in the in-line mod, installed a second temp gauge but rarely look at it and enjoy driving their D2.

I'm with this guy. I don't have an alternate gauge installed or even an UltraGauge. Just a blue dongle and the Torque Pro app that isn't always running.
Agreed. Turner engine with 25k miles on it. Inline mod. Check fluids and drive it hard. If it goes at this point, I'm done. Not worth worrying about about it after doing everything possible to make it reliable. Constantly watching the temp takes the fun out of owning it. I still hit 210-212 in traffic in 90 degree weather and really don't care. 180-194 90% of the time.
I’ve evolved into a #3. Have an ultra gauge running all the time, but rarely look at it and just drive.
Agreed that the Inline mod is a necessity. I check fluids every other week or so and otherwise just drive it.
