Fan Clutch?

Too many untested mods.
Land Rover spent a lot of money renting time on test tracks for brutal cold, heat, off roading to test the fan blade, fan clutch, cowlings our dear D2's were built with.
I would go back to the standard D2 fan.
You are losing a lot of surface area with the smaller fan.
That big RING around the D2 fan is to keep air flow thru the radiator and to keep suction.
With the DI fan - you are sucking some air in the engine compartment and just moving it around.
The fan clutch needs that big ring as it seals the area between the radiator cowling and the fan's blades.
That is what heats up the fan clutch and makes it engage.
-----
With my D1 and D2 - I notice...
When it is hot out and the engine is working - you can tell if the fan clutch is engaging as the fan really roars when pulling air thru.
Off roading - you are hardly moving yet demanding a lot from the engine and cooling system.
There is no moving air hardly from motion, so you need to have a totally "fit" cooling system which has no error.
For off road-
I would put the D2 fan back in.
And, get a good fan clutch.
I would put in the soft spring thermostat.
Plus - it would be cool if you could have a switch which turns on the electric AUX fan to blow - when you are off roading.
And, don't use the A/C.
Just my .02. You probably think I am a jerk for saying get rid of the D1 fan.
But, I am trying to offer advice unbiased as I don't own your D2...(so I can do that)

But I can tell you the difference, the '04 fan is $250, the D1 fan was free mounted on a $45 chevy clutch. And no, I have no overheating issues whatsoever.
And no, I dont think your a jerk

As for no air flow from motion, depends on speed. At freeway speed you can run with no fan, just don't stop at red lights very long. Many users in the frozen north have run all winter with no fan. To experiment, hold a large pizza box out the window at 70 mph and see what kind of air flow you have....
Now off roading and rock climbing in low range, yep, you need that fan air flow. Agree that having electric fan be able to over ride on is good, on a D1 it is always on with AC, and if needed in a pinch, you can unplug AC compressor, so that you force the electric fans on but don't have the extra heat load from the condenser.

Just to clarify the 03/04 D2's with the one piece fan blade/clutch DO NOT have the ring around the fan blades. In fact the fan blade looks exactly like a 96-98 D1 fan blade. I'm looking into replacing my 04's fan clutch and I'm sorry but 300.00 for another one piece unit is crazy. I think I remember seeing an aftermarket D1 fan blade for around 25.00 online and the Hayden 2991 fan clutch for 55.00.
Anyone with an 03/04 which fan blade did you use when you switched to an earlier two piece design?

I called the salvage yard and told them to send me the fan off of a 2002. that is the one with a ring around the outside and the bolt flange for a removable clutch
My thought process was exactly the same on that $300 03'-04 1 piece unit. I called a half-dozen places and none were under $300. I saw the clutch for under $65 at most places so I immediately got a different fan

exactly. I have been thinking about returning the 2991 and getting the HD. If this thing is actually coming on then it still has less power than the condenser fan. Maybe its faulty because this did not meet my expectations in the least
